Default New Channel Master 4200 Series Antennas.

A friend just e-mailed a link to THIS PDF file of the new CM 4200 series antennas. The new 4228HD is advertised for channels 7 through 69. I'm looking forward to reviews of these antennas.

Coming late 2008 according to the catalog for all the new models (this catalog is on the website too)

anyone have a more specific date?
Channel master has cleared their entire website of the old models, except for the manuals.

that's an interesting point: what if any are the differences between this and the traditional 4228 and what effect do they have ?

Just look at those reflector panels. There's little to distinguish these models now from the Anntennas Direct DB series.

Other points of interest from the catalog:

* CM calls all three "large directional" antennas on the page 27 spec sheet. The description boxes on page 7 and 8 appear to be somewhat more accurate, describing the 4220 as a medium directional antenna.

* The spec sheet lists the same gain for both the 4220 and 4221.

Perhaps they weren't very careful proofreading the galleys before they released the catalog.

The DB8 is useless at VHF-hi whereas we know the CM4228 has useful performance there. CM claim the new 4228HD covers VHF-hi so it will be interesting to see if the changes have had any effect (good or bad) on the 4228 VHF-hi performance.

Pictures of the new 4228 indicate a continuous reflector from side to side with a break horizonally between the top 4 and bottom 4 bow ties, should help with continuity across the reflector.

1. These are made in China,
2. CM closed their US manufacturing the end of August,
3. They are 3 lbs lighter,
4. Newer doesn't mean better. Grab one of the old ones while you can.

I did!! I bought one last March and just installed it. I don't like the newer design. I don't like the built-in balun. I would rather have the external one that can be replaced cheap if it goes bad. Murphy's Law: "What can go wrong will". Plus, I don't need improve gain on high VHF. Our only high VHF station now is 70 miles away. This antenna still pulls it in fine. After the switch the 70 mile VHF (ch7) goes to ch.29 and our local station which is only 25 miles away goes to ch.7. I could get that with a coat hanger.

I bought just at the right time. I got my 4228 at a reasonable price, and I got the good one! Not the higher priced, back ordered, cheaply made Chinese version!
