I don't want to pay for cable either,
but $15 a month is really not that bad.
You get perfect reception, and it's compatible with your old VCR.

Another option is the Echostar DTVpal which automatically changes channels at set times, and feeds the signal to your old analog VCR. I'm planning to buy two of these once they become available.

Has anyone heard anything about Dish Network selling the DTVpals to Dish subscribers at a discounted price? I have not heard any rumors, nor received any e-mails, mailings, or anything else from Dish to that effect, but I thought maybe there was a possibility they would give their Dish Network customers a deal on the converter. It appears it's $59.99 no matter who you are.

A few months ago, I bought a video capture device to put my vhs tapes onto dvd. The device has composite inputs. I just got a new dvr. If I connected the dvr to the capture device, I could go straight to disc, right?

I have heard of a remote control that can be programmed to change the channel automatically at preset times, I don't know if it's the same thing, but the name of the one you are talking about does not sound familar, so this could be something different, and maybe cheaper.

Something like that would work - clumsy, but it could work. You would have to do two programmings: one to program the VCR to record at a particular time, and a second to program the remote to switch to the proper channel at that same time.

Are there any converter boxes that can be programmed to switch channels at a given time? That would be very useful for the person using the VCR.

Another option is to get a TV tuner card for the PC. Then you have options, you can watch your recorded programs on the monitor, connect the TV to the computer (I used to connect my old analog set to the computer via S-Video), or burn recordings onto a blank DVD or DVD-RW to play in your DVD player. Cheaper than buying a DVD Recorder with an ATSC tuner.
