Default SMART antennas - Do they exist for TV?

I did a quick google search, and I found next to nothing. The latest article I found dated back to 2003.

Do smart antennas no longer exist?

They weren't so smart.

It's hard to improve on the old folded dipole.

I think he's referring to something akin to a phased array antenna. With enough elements and sufficiently powerful signal processing, it would be theoretically possible to get CM 4228 or AD 91XG type gains out of an antenna in multiple directions without physically moving the array.

RF techniques like this have led to things like 802.11n (WiFi with MIMO) and other technologies using advanced diversity strategies.

Current DSP technology is only good enough to do this for a small number of antenna elements right now, so that's going to limit the peak gain you'd be able to achieve. Cost may also be an issue.

The current solution of high gain antenna plus rotator is pretty tough to beat. Phased arrays will have a hard time approaching the price/performance point that we currently have.

Cheers,

Oh well.

I thought a phased array would be cool, since there's no need to turn it. Just let it sit there while it automagically finds the strongest direction.

Default smart antennas

The GE analog to digital converter I just bought has a port for a smart antenna. This port is completely different from the F connectors.

This may be a chicken or the egg problem. That is, there may not be enough TVs, converters, etc. equipped with the special smart antenna port yet.

Here is a smart antenna that is listed but no longer available for sale. Reason unknown.

Default A problem with a smart antenna used with multiple TVs

Correction: I said "analog to digital converter". I should have said "digital to analog converter".

Correct me if I am wrong: if the Smart Antenna receives instruction, e.g., from a set top box, as to how to home in on a signal, then using the same outdoor antenna for multiple TVs through cable splitters is problematic? However, it apparently would work well for an antenna dedicated to a particular TV set.

I think the interest in smart antennas got a boost when a couple of startups were looking for some venture capital. As mentioned, the buzz word is MIMO wrt digital communications. Most of what I've seen is two-way, low powered, high bandwidth and mobile stuff. Not saying DTV can't benefit, but it doesn't appear to be the driver for this (not so) new technology.

I would like a smart pre-amp....one that would only focus on the channel you wanted at that time, thus saving it from possible "distractions" from nearby frequencies. This could also help in noise reduction because it wouldn't be trying to listen to such a broad spectrum. this would be impossible for multiple tv's wanting to tune different channels, but could help out with the odd channel that is just a little too weak.

I don't think they make one like that, but you should be able to peel out a frequency and amplify it then put it back with a jointenna.
