Default Can't get HDTV channels in the Hartford, CT area

I live in Manchester, CT, about 10 miles east of Hartford, CT.

I can get the following digital channels using an antennas direct DB4 medium non-directional antenna:
call sign network location dir dist gain
WWLP-DT NBC SPRINGFIELD MA 347 22.8 52%
WTNH-DT ABC NEW HAVEN CT 237 34.5 53%
WTXX-DT CW WATERBURY CT 264 18.2 48%

Can someone explain how I can get Springfield, New Haven, and Waterbury channels but not Hartford channels?

I have a 50' coax run from my rooftop mounted antenna. The Hartford channels are in the signal range of 31 to 46. The channels listed above are in the range of 10 to 12.

The Hartford broadcast antennas are approx. 18 miles away, while the stations I'm getting are on antennas 23 to 30+ miles away.

Is my cable run too long? Do I need an amplifier at the antenna? I'm wondering if the channels I'm trying to get in the 'high' range and maybe I'm loosing signal down the cable. If I put an amp on will I maybe loose the channels I'm already getting? With antenna gain around 50% I would hope that wouldn't be the case.

Any input (especialy digital ) is greatly appreciated!

it sure sounds to me like you have the antenna aimed in the wrong direction, although I have heard that some people have had issues getting some Hartford stations if they are in the wrong place in Manchester. Since all three stations that you listed are VHF digital stations, I have a feeling that your DB-4 may not be connected properly, since you shouldn't be getting ANY reception on those stations with a UHF -only DB-4. WFSB-DT, WUVN-DT, WVIT-DT and WTIC-DT are all on UHF: something is obviously wrong, and I suspect your installation may be faulty.

Default good point, what are my next steps?

Thanks for the quick response Tiger, and good catch that I'm only getting VHF stations. I must have looked at antennaweb.org 1000 times and overlooked that.

I was careful to orient the antenna correctly using a compass, with the antenna screen 'away' from the broadcast direction and the bowties 'toward' broadcast direction.

I'd be happy to find out that my installation was incorrect, but it was so darn simple that I can't imagine what I could have done wrong. 1) The elements attached to the antenna, 2) coax (75 ohm) from antenna to tv, and then 3) channel scan. There's only one coax input on the tv and it's marked VHF/UHF.

The TV is a Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 and the manual says the following:
NTSC American TV Standard
ATSC (8VSB TERRESTRIAL) ATSC COMPLIANT 8VSB
ANTENNA 75-ohm external terminal for VHF/UHF

Am I missing something? As you said, the fact that I'm getting VHF on a 'UHF only' antenna is sure odd, especially when I can't get ANY UHF.

I'll entertain any and all suggestions as this is really frustrating when it seems everything should be so simple.

Looking at the manual I noticed it shows two different scans, analog and digital. Did you do the Digital scan and the analog scan?

Hi rbinck,

I ran only the digital scan. Should I have run both?

If you are only receiving vhf you need to set the tuner to cable off them scan.

I own the 32" sony xbr lcd and to be honest made the same error the first time out of the box.

pays to read the owners manual

You are living right UNDER the WFSB-DT and WTXX-DT transmitters where you are in Unionville: you ought to be able to get everything with dental floss...LOL

Thanks Rick, you and the rest of the community members here ROCK! You nailed the problem. Having had cable tv for so long, I never thought there'd be a need to change that setting to 'cable off' before running the scan. I figured just having the attenna attached and the scan would get the job done.

I just put the antenna out on my porch and ran the scan again and my results went from 4 channels (all VHF by the way) to 19! Well above my expectations. I'm going to cross-reference with antennaweb.org and see how I did.
