Can Directv hd receivers be used as OTA receivers without subscribing to directv?

there have been a number of discussions on this forum about that topic. Try searching "DirecTV HD" for the discussions. The answer is not clearcut.

I believe it depends on the model. I know for a fact that with the newer models, H20 and HR20, they need to be connected to a dish and be activated with D* to be able to use the OTA portion. Not sure which of the older models exactly you can do it with. I would ask this question over in the Directv section of the board.

I have an older DirectTV RCA DTC-210 that I use strictly for OTA tv reception. I believe the DTC-100 will work also, but that is an even older tuner. I'm not sure how these two stack up to newer tuners in OTA reception ability.

If you are looking for a low-cost way to get OTA digital TV, I do believe that there are better ways to get it than trying an older generation DirecTV tuner. I had a DTC-100, and found that it was barely adequate for OTA reception, and offers none of the modern connectivity that digital TV sets really eed today.

Sure, everyone's case is different. I've read good things about Samsung's newer DTB-H260F tuner. I just happened to get the DTC-210 locally for $40. Connected to an old, 13" tv with a $7 replacement set of rabbit ears and a $4 or so RS bowtie antenna, it pulls in nearly all of Houston's DTV stations situated about 18 miles from the transmitters. I was fairly lucky that everything worked as well as it did for me.

OP, you can do alot worse than to follow TB's advice. He's one of the gurus here, and has probably forgotten more than I'll ever know about OTA reception.
