Default What is QAM

I know it has something to do with getting HD channels from your cable provider & that you need a QAM capable receiver. How do I know if my local Charter cable company has or is QAM capable?

Do I need to get the cable signal straight from the wall outlet or do I have to run it through the digital cable box first?

CC has the Samsung SIR T451 receiver at a decent price with a $50.00 gift card rebate. It is supposed to be QAM capable. Charter now has three local network HD channels that they say are free if you lease their HD box. Will the SIR T451 pick up these channels?

I could still get the local HD's with an antenna with this box, but would like to get them without the hassle of putting up an antenna if possible.

QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) is a method of combining two amplitude-modulated (AM) signals into a single channel, thereby doubling the effective bandwidth. QAM is used with pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) in digital systems, especially in wireless applications.

Now as to will the box you mentioned work with your particuler cable company, you should ask your cable company. As I understand the issues, there is more than just QAM involved. There are scrambling for premiums and pay for view capabilities that the box also has to support.
