You clearly have preamp overload, but there's insufficient information to know if a high overload preamp would actually allow for reception of the DC stations. The tvfool data for the zip code posted shows that the DC stations are too weak.

In any event, your overload problems should decrease significantly on Feb 18, 2009.

You might try a Winegard HDP-269 urban pre-amp. It is only 12dB of amplification vs the 7777 being 30 some odd dB, but it is highly resistant to overload. I use one and I am less than 3 miles from a full power transmitter - no problems.

Default Here's a little challenge? Location and future

Zip 04691, 1 mile W of rt 1 turn off 189 to Lubec, Me.

US stations Bangor, Maine, @ 100 air miles, 2, 5, 7, 22, 33 @ west

Calais Me, @ 40 air miles, , 13, @ NE

Canada Stations: St John, NB, 4 @ 120 miles @ ENE
Halifax, NS 21 @ 75 miles @ SW

These channels I currently get with chopped (@ 1/3 left) VHF antenna hung on rope on 3rd floor. 4,5,22,33 usually no good.

Canada channels remaining analog @ 2 more years.

I am considering winegard HD 8200U, with Channelmaster 7700 preamp, short mast, and rotor on almost flat roof @ 45 feet off ground.(10-12' higher than roof) Icing is definite problem

Complicating is I'm working on a refurbishing 100 watt ham radio receiver/transmitter (160-10 meter) which will have antenna also installed close by. Call sign is AB1JZ, which locates me.?

These WILL NOT be used at same time.

Thanks (73's)

ken

Presume DTV converter with analog pass thru required, as I still have analog, tho recent JVC tv, (Iart series) @ 4 years old.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Of the channels, I'd rate 21 in Halifax (globaltv) as best. Believe there are 3-4 more within deepest fringe range in Canada maybe accessible.

Thanks, ken

Default Post transition, 8,13, UHF, 38 miles out

Guys, I'd appreciate a recommendation.

This is the back end of the TVFOOL site. (Zip is 77480)

?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29&q=id%3d7c72df4ab8591 5

URL munged above. Can't post URL's yet.

Houston, TX, 38 miles out, lots of trees, flat terrain, post transition. I've got two high VHF stations (8, 13) and the rest UHF. 15 ft. antenna mast available.

I'd like recommendations for antenna, pre-amp, etc.

Mother-in-law, fixed income, needs to be bulletproof (don't want a lot of callbacks, grin).

Thanks for the help!

Antennapoint says that there is only 3 television stations in that vicinity and they are all in different directions and are all almost 40 miles away from you.

Rabbit ears shows about 20 stations in your area - which is the 8th largest market in the USA. http://www.rabbitears.info/market.php

Sweeney Texas

I would use a Winegard 8200U antenna and a RCA rotor from Lowes and Belden 1829 AC wire and no pre amp until you find out how good the signals are.

The last install I did - I numbered a chart for the rotor and put the television stations in order from 2 - 70, so they could look at the station they wanted to watch and hit the button on the remote control for the rotor. Rotor puts antenna in exact same place everytime. Stations signals creep around a little bit, but nothing so drastic that you have to change the settings for the rotor.

If the person was willing, I would also suggest a 24 foot tower. The higher you could get the antenna the better the signals are going to be.

Whiting Maine 04691

Here is the maps for Bangor Maine

169th largest market

http://www.rabbitears.info/market.php

When you click on the channel and then on the service contour map they give you a general idea of how far the station is predicted to transmit.

WVII is still going to be channel 7 and WLBZ is still going to be channel 2 and WABI is moving up to channel 19 digital.WMED is going to move down to channel 10 digital.

That tells us that you are going to need a good VHF antenna.

Same deal as always - use a Winegard 8200U and a rotor. Same deal with the amplifier - CM 7777 - if you can find one. Even Channel Master is sold out of amplifiers and does not know when they will have more for sale. Use the good Belden cable and keep your runs as short as possible and forget about suspending the antenna off a clothes line rope.

My maps doesn't go into Canada.

The most distant stations are 73, 78 and about 90 miles from your house. Hats off to the FCC for keeping them on the low band.

You are line of sight and only 36 miles from the Houston transmitters, no way you need to waste money on an 8200U.

You have one VHF low station and it is Ion (who cares) on ch5, but all your signals are strong, and the HD7694P should do you fine with no pre-amp.

Just wanted to give an update on my MIL's application, post transition.

I guess due to the trees, the HD7694P did not do the job by itself. I had to
1) add CM7777 pre-amp, and
2) Lower the antenna by about 2 feet. I guess there was a major concentration of leaves that I was hitting at the highest extension (20 ft.).

She gets all stations at high signal strength (S/N ratio?) except KNWS (51-1, 47) , which neither she nor I can get post transition.

Thanks for all the recommendations!
