Default What happened to my local HD channels?

I have a HD 32 inch tv and have time warner cable but just basic cable so i pay 20 a month for it for a long time already. I used to have an old crt TV and use to pay 70/month for regular cable but cancelled it few years ago when not needing to watch much cable tv.

When i got my HD TV last year, i saw many channels like nbc and fox had the channels in HD and really liked how good it looked. Well i haven't opened my tv for like 1 month and just see that i no longer have channels like cbs and nbc in HD and its really horrible the picture. Its even worst than my old CRT TV. The only channels i have HD that are local are FOX. Because i'm getting basic cable only and pay $20/month all i get are the extra basic channels like NY1 and TBS.

Can someone explain why this is happening? I recalled for me channel 4, nbc had it like 4-1 HD, 4-2 and 4-3 etc. Now its just one channel 4 and its really horrible quality. Can someone tell me what happened to my channels?

Time Warner probably moved them. You will now need a cable box from Time Warner to get those channels again.

If you're a TWC subscriber, you need to be calling them instead of asking us.

You need to re-scan your cable. I have TW and get around 24 digital channels and subchannels (the .1 and .2 ones). on my TV that does not have a box. Most are in HD, but not all.

Time Warner does not advertise you can get HD TV on basic or standard cable, because they want you to get the full "Digital Package".

Not sure about BASIC $20 cable, I assume it's just the local over the air stations and may be some cable access channels through the cable. (Why don't you put an antenna up and get it free?)

Back to your question. With that assumption that basic cable falls under the FEDERAL LAW, that says cable must have common carry of local stations, including HD TV (if that is what is aired, OTA) this is the scoop.

The Digital HD TV on basic (analog) cable is called QAM. TW Reps have no clue what you are talking about if you say QAM. Most TW Reps will deny you can even get HDTV on basic out of ignorance, when I know for a fact you can. I had a similar problem in that PBS got moved and moved from one QAM channel to another. I had to rescan to find it. For a while it was just off. They had the basic channel 4 SD, but 4.1 HD and the other sub-channels, 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4 were missing. TW was useless. I called PBS and they knew about the complaints. Obviously they want their programs to go out over cable like it should. Now I HAD STANDARD CABLE... the $70 month deal with 79 channels. I am not sure about $20 BASIC cable.... (again get an antenna and save over $240 a year.

Not ALL TV's have a QAM tuner, if the TV is over over three years old lets say. I assume they all do now? You have to check your manual. If your manual does not say you have ATSC QAM tuner you will not get HD on basic cable.

TIME WARNER screws with the QAM channels and you need to RE SCAN. That is a matter of going to the menus and searching scan channels. Again the manual will help. Also it may have some menu selections to turn QAM on or off or select antenna vs cable. Not sure what you need to do, but ASSUMING you have QAM and Time Warner is following the law, you should get the HDTV channels back after a rescan. Scanning is what you had to do when you first set the TV up.

Cable companies DO have local channels unscrambled in HD , but they:
(1) do not tell anyone, so they can sell you their overpriced digital tier and
(2) frequently move the unscrambled digital channels around so that if you do happen to find them, they disappear and you buy their overpriced digital tier.

He was already receiving the digital channels but lost them, most likely because TW moved them. The fact that he was receiving them means that his TV does have a QAM tuner.

He is looking for "rescan" but can't find it, most likely because there is no option with that name in the menus. He should simply redo the TV's initial set up routines and make sure he scans for cable channels rather than antenna channels.
