General Q about AT&T upgrade policy

Before I take the plunge, I was wondering if any of you smarties had general info on how this situation may work.

Years ago, I bought 2 phones from AT&T, an iPhone 3GS for me and a regular dumb phone for my wife (lol). Our two year contract has been up since last June. Now, she is ready for a new phone, but I still love my 3GS and don't want a new one at least until the iPhone 5 in June or October (as the current rumors has it).

So, my understanding is that I can get a discounted phone for my wife now, with a new 2-year contract, and then upgrade my iPhone at a later date, and all that will happen is that the contract will be extended by a few months (however long it is between the new wife's phone and my new iPhone 5).

Does this sound correct? I'll confirm with AT&T for sure, but it is nice going into the sales chit chat knowing what to expect.
