Default 7.1 System for Cheap?

Ok, guys I am need of a potential Christmas gift for my dad because I need to start saving money for it now. What is the cheapest 7.1 HTiB system that I can buy that has TrueHD and DTS-HD MA decoding? I found a system on Amazon for $494, but it doesn't have the decoding of the HD audio sources. He's got a PS3 and a 46" 1080p Samsung LCD if that helps. Thanks in advance.

One of my clients picked one of those systems up and I set it up for him last weekend. He is pretty happy with it.

Everything except the B speakers worked perfectly on it. I just could not get the B speakers to work so I ended up setting connecting the other room speakers to the "surround back" pair and he just sets the Onkyo to 7 channel stereo to listen to the speakers in the other room. Not ideal but it works.

FYI - On that system, B speakers will only work when A speakers are off.

So it's not a true 7.1 system then?

Yes it is on channel A, channel B is stereo and must be operated independently of channel A..

Is B like Zone 2 on my receiver?

Thumbs up Onkyo 6100

That's right. "B" speakers are the same as "Zone 2". The 6100 is most definitely a 7.1 system and decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio, as well as all of the other Dolby and DTS audio formats. It also features HDMI switching. No matter where you purchase it, the 6100 is the biggest bang for the buck in true 7.1 systems.

For all intents and purposes, yes.

I tried switching to just B speakers and to A + B but not sound would come from that the B set. According to the manual, when switching to A +B, the A speakers switch to 5.1 (if I remember correctly).

I'll play with is more when I go back to finish things up. He doesn't have a component rack/stand yet and when he gets one he likes, I'll go back and reconnect everything.

I heard from Onkyo on the B speaker situation.. the only way to get sound to the B speakers is if th esource is analog. A digital signal cannot be heard through the B channel... that rules out any HDMI or Toslink signal... Basically, any source using the red/white composite 2 channel signal will play through the B speakers

That really seems like a waste... How hard would it have been to actually work the preferred way?? Ugh...

I agree but they'd just say.. pay more for better functionality, I guess.

I can make it work for this client though.
