would the onkyo 706 be better?

The Onkyo's are good with features vs cost.

The Denon AVR-2309CI is an exceptional reciever. If you can swing the cost of one ($1,200), you will not regret it. Excellent upconversion and top notch quality. Here is a link to Amazon for it. It's smaller brother, the AVR-1909 is also another great receiver.

Yamaha makes very good AVRs as well. The 465 & 665 are very sweet receivers with 4 HDMI inputs.

As Stew mentioned, Denon, Yamaha and HK all make great receivers with the specs you listed.. I am more partial to Denon and Onkyo myself.. I really love the Onkyo *06 series as the best bang for you buck line on the market. I really love the Denon AVR1909 as well. I have the 606 and it does all I need and then some. The fit with my Velodyne speakers is primo.. The 706 and 806 are even better if the added features and power is what you are looking for and justifies the added costs. They just released the new TX-SR607 this month. Have not heard it yet but may be worth a check at its $495 price tag.

Thumbs up Onkyo

Indeed, I also believe Onkyo has the best bang for the buck. I am completely satisfied with mine !!
