Default can't get audio from HDTV channels through receiver

Hi Peeps,

I need help as I am pullling out my hair for the last couple of months. I have a Bell Expressvu HDTV Receiver. I use and HDMI cable to go from it to my TV. So now all my audio and video is in the TV. So now I use the Digital Coax OUT on my TV and goto the Digital Coax IN on my Phillips Digital Surround Receiver.

You would think that would be it !! However for some reason I am only getting audio from my Standard Def Channels through my surround receiver. There is no audio from any of my HDTV channels coming through surround.

Funny thing is when I change channels from a Standard to a Hi Def I here my Surround receiver do a little click as if somethings changed and then I have no sound. But as soon as I switch back to mt standard Def channel, there's the click and I have audio again

The only way I can seem to get audio from my HDTV channels is to listen to the TV Speakers which sort of defeats the point, or use Red & White RCA plugs from my TV to my Surround which isn't digital anymore.

Does anybody have any idea why Standard Def is working and Hi Def channels aren't.

I really don't want to buy a new surround system yet and I do think this should work !!!

Thanks for listening (or reading) and any help would be appreciated !!

Bell tells me it's my system but I would like to know why...

Dash

Did you try bypassing the TV with the digital coax and going strait to the receiver? This would be the best setup and still will allow you to use either the SS receiver and or TV speakes for sound. In most cases, the digital out from TV's are for the built in ATSC/QAM tuners and only do PCM 2 channel (dolby prologic) for everything else. If you did bypass the TV and you still have the same issue, it is probably an issue with your cable box.. What is the audio out set to?

Ok, the last time I was in a forum about this we discussed the TV Coax out and mine does actually allow Digital Audio out. After much argument and him looking up the specs it was realized I do have one of the few models that can use the Digital out on the back of th tv.

As for bypassing the TV, I would like nothing better however the Satellite receiver only has Optical and my TV and Surround Receiver only have Digital Coax. So you see my problem !! )

I think it might be time to update my receiver when more money comes along, I will make sure it takes HDMI or atleast has an optical on it.

Funny thing is I just realized it's not only HDTV Channels but also the Very Very odd SD Channel

99% of the SD channels are fine except for 213 SUNTV, 266 SCN and
599 TOONR

Could these HDTV and couple Sdef channels be using some format that my Phillips surround receiver can't break down ??

Dash

P.S if your curious about my Digital Out on the back of my TV you can look up the model LG 42LB5D )

So I assume you have your DVD player and or other components connected through the TV as well?? If so, does the DD 5.1/DTS decoder light up when you are playing a movie or game or whatever? Does it light up with SD DD 5.1 broadcasts? If you only have digital coax, do you only have 1 input on yor receiver? They do sell a digital optical to coax converter for like $11. I used 1 on my old receiver and it worked great.

You know what, I think I actually did connect everything to the TV first this time and yes my DVD audio comes through fine

On my SS receiver I have a Dig/Aux channel which means I can switch back and forth between the 2 with the same button. I always have it set on Digital In which I assume means it will only allow you to hear Digital audio as it does show a small Digital up top while playing something as well.

I don't have the best of SS systems obviously, the system I am using right now is about 5 years old and is a Philips MX3950D which is a 5 disc DVD/ Digital Surround Unit. I don't even use the DVD part of it anymore as I use my LG DVD instead

I did not even think of a converter for Optical to Dig Coax but now that I know I might have to look for one..

Thanks for the info

I'm having this exact problem with this exact receiver, obtained second-hand. Unfortunately unlike the thread starter, I can't just go out and get a new one. I have been able to get the system working with a TOSLink to digital coax converter but only if the Bell box is set to output PCM only, and not Dolby Digital (which leads me to believe that it's only receiving a stereo signal).

Any ideas? I'm starting to wonder whether this thing is even capable of decoding Dolby Digital.
