Phillips dvr hard drive movies deleted, can I undelete movies

I have a Phillips dvr/dvd recorder with a 160 GB hard drive from western digital. I thought that I had moved my videos through a firewire to my computer but was wrong. In my stupidity I had hooked the dvr back to the tv and used the remote control to delete the home movies of my son. I found out after the fact that the windows movie maker on the computer had not saved the video files as movies but a projects and could not seem to find the source files. If anybody knows how to undelete movies from the dvr hard drive that would be of great help. I have hooked up the dvr hard drive to my computer and was able to view the files using the ubuntu cdrom and run from the cdrom without installation. The problem with that is I can view all the files from what I can see but I cannot see the movie files. I am not sure if being logged in as usr instead of root through the ubuntu has anything with not being able to see the movie files. Thank you
