Default Can I attach an indoor antenna to my amp and deliver that signal over HDMI to my tv?

Hello all - I have a plasma TV mounted to my wall and I went to great pains to hide all wires. I ran 2 HDMI cables in wall over to my various peripherals and trust me, it was a complete P.I.t.A.

Thanks to a certain local cable company's HORRIBLE service, prices, and digital cable box software decisions regarding downgrades - I have decided to give time waster cable the finger. I have a ps3 and that coupled with Hulu, Neflix and netflix watch-it-now I am very happy.

The one thing i miss - basketball. I purchased an antenna and I can get beautiful high definition picture for local and free broadcasts. I am VERY happy with this setup but I have 2 problems:

The ugly antenna and wires.
I can get a new antenna that doesnt have the rabbit ears, but can i hook it up to my Yamaha RX-V663 and deliver TV over the HDMI?
I should have run COAX behind my wall when i had the chance, but the digital cable runs over HDMI so i didnt think it necessary...and it's not really an option now w/out doing some serious wall cutting...and that would probably end up in divorce.
Or is there a simple setup box that I can attach my antenna to and then run through the HDMI?

Any help would be much appreciated!

PS-sorry for the excessive rambling!

Your receiver won't have an ATSC tuner built in. So, that option is out. Yes, there are external tuners you can buy, although I don't know whether there are any with HDMI outputs. Try google.

hey - yeah... i suppose you're right. thanks for the confirmation! i have been trying google and i found a few set top boxes that have hdmi output - but i'm trying to find the happy place between cost and results... since this is purely cosmetic i am having a hard time justifying high costs.

i did find one by a company called Olin called the Olin HVBT-2000

I am having a hard time finding one in the US...but it appears to be something similar to what i want.

There are any number of converters to HDMI that take a digital toslink but i just want something i can hook my antenna into in the corner and connect to my HDMI wall plate...

As BS stated, you can get an external tuner with HDMI, but they run between $150-$250 new. I did see them on E-bay for around a hundo, but I would think using your built in tuner would be an better option. Perhaps using the coax from your cable company that is already in place is an option. See where it runs and see if you can use it or just cut it at the point and crimp on a new connector piece..

Yes, using existing coax is a great idea except in my case it won't work b/c the whole reason I am looking to convert to HDMI is to avoid running coax to the TV. When I ran the cables to my set I had digital cable and a PS3 - so i thought there was no need to put a coax jack back there. fail.

Instead - i just ran two HDMI jacks - one for the PS3 and the other for digital cable. This was a mistake for 2 reasons - first, a coaxial cable back there would have helped me avoid all of this and 2 - my yamaha amp makes that second HDMI cable redundant as it has 2 hdmi in and only 1 out.

Behind my TV i put in an HDMI wall plate, a stereo wire jack and a power source - so no wires showing. Now, i have a coaxial coming out of the side and it's ass ugly. so i want to plug my antenna into some sort of device that takes OTA COAX in and spits HDMI out - that way i can plug all of that into my HDMI wall jack, kick it off to the side and enjoy a "wireless" HDTV

you know - i want my cake etc etc

Default New Problem!

Hello all - I followed the advice and puchased a DTB-h260f digital set top box. in addition and inspired by the advice to use coax as an antenna path, i bought 25' of coax, ran cable into the attic - hooked up an antenna and ran the other end to what used to be my cable-company input. the picture? looks awesome. the tv setup? perfect - no ugly coax and now no ugly antennas.

the problem? no sound over HDMI.

When I google: DTBH260F hdmi "no sound"
i get a ton of hits...it looks like there's a problem delivering the "analog" channel's audio over hdmi...

i am confused. I have my audio input on my panasonic vieja to "HDMI" and i have all of the settings on my STB correct.. i dried running into the amp and also directly to the tv but no luck.

One solution people seem to be suggesting on the net is an HDMI to DVI converter and then back to HDMI. Does that sound reasonable?

any advice would be much appreciated

thanks again guys!

Are you sure the 260 is working? Run a digital optical cable from the 260 to you amp and see what happens.

The OP is not using an amp, just the TV for audio.
