Can I copy a HDTV signal from my TV to a regular DVD disk? If so, I do have 3 questions.
1. What would be a good recorder to do this at a reasonable price? 2. Would I at least get a fairly good DVD quality pic out of it? 3. Would the recorder fit a 2 hour HDTV movie on a regular DVD disc? The reason I am thinking of this is that my oppo upconverting DVD player does such a great job of making regular DVD's look good on my plasma TV that I don't mind trying this all out. |

No, you cannot record high definition to disc yet. Only to a hard drive.

As posted there is no hardware solution for the retail market, but you can do it with a PC. My set up is pretty crude but works 100% grabbing the stream in it's raw form via firewire which in turn will give you a 1:1 recording. I just use a Motorola DCT6200 STB's firewire to the PC and record using CapDVHS. And if I want to put it on a DVD I use HDTV2DVD which will remux the the .ts stream into a .vob format so the DVD player can read the disc. But for Dish people this may be more difficult due to the mpg 4 stream they use.
If your OTA then your looking at a Hauppauge or something similar I don't know what your set up is so I don't know what type of feed your getting. A one hr .ts stream from cable providers is like 4 gigs on your hard drive, so to use a regular DVD is out of the question. But using a dual layer DVD will get you way more and they are dirt cheap.

Any good quality DVD recorder can be used. I record from my DVR to regular DVD frequently. Mostly shows for the grandchildren since I use my HD PVR for HD recording from the DVR. See: Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR Video Capture device
You just have to hook up the composite video (or s-video) and audio outputs to the DVD recorder inputs. Then you may have to set the output format of the DVR to 480i if it does not output SD with the DVR set to a HD output format. Some do, some don't, actually most don't. Now if you are talking about getting an output from your TV's internal tuner, I don't think there are any video outputs available on any HDTVs that I know of. |

Can I copy a HDTV signal from my TV to a regular DVD disk? If so, I do have 3 questions.
1. What would be a good recorder to do this at a reasonable price? Check out the Philips DVDR3575H/37 it is my principal recording unit. I also record via a capture card and PC and muxing etc. with Video-Redo TV Suite. This also makes for a high bitrate DVD but takes considerbly longer time wise. These Philips units can be had for about $300. I've had my unit for over a year and have no problems. It works alot like an old VCR, one can set the time and quality of record and it will record the program to the unit's internal 160 Gig HD. One can then edit out the commercials and burn to SD DVD. Also one can record straight to a SD DVD disc if one doesn't mind commercials etc. 2. Would I at least get a fairly good DVD quality pic out of it? Quality is based by the record setting, a one hour TV program can easily be recorded and burned to a SD DVD disc at a high bitrate...on the order of 8-9 mbs which is on the order of a SuperBit DVD. I also have a OPPO and these look quite good on a 56 inch screen. Depending upon length longer programs can be recorded to the unit's internal hardrive but to burn them to a SD DVD one will have to select a lower bitrate. This can be automatically determined by the unit or manually set. Note that they can be recorded to the HD at a high bitrate making for a better playback of the recorded program via the HD and also that high bitrate recorded programs that are too long for a single layer SD DVD can be split and burned on two discs. 3. Would the recorder fit a 2 hour HDTV movie on a regular DVD disc? Longer programs can be recorded to the unit's internal harddrive but to burn them to a SD DVD one will have to select a lower bitrate. This can be automatically determined by the unit or manually set. The reason I am thinking of this is that my oppo upconverting DVD player does such a great job of making regular DVD's look good on my plasma TV that I don't mind trying this all out. Hope this helps, Wiley |

Thanks for all the responses! I was hoping my HDTV actually did have an output but just looked at the TV and manual and it does not. Will try the PC route then and see how it goes. I guess there must be a reason why none of the HDTV's have any video outputs.
