Default AV Receiver Recommendations

I was seriously considering the Onkyo 606 but have found from researching at local stores and communicating with Onkyo support that the 606 only displays the volume bar when in Cable/Sat mode. Unfortunately, I really want it displayed regardless of source input.

Is this true of the 706/806? Based off my research and needs I am basically sold on the Onkyo, with one slight reservation. It doesn't seem to fair well when playing music. My usage will definitely favor movies/video entertainment so it may not be much of an issue. I'm not sure.

In a perfect world I think I would get a Yamaha, but to get the features I want, I just can't see paying that much.

I have also been looking at various Denons but they usually are light when it comes to HDMI inputs. On paper the Sony 920 looks good, but is it a true quality product or is it a mainstream product dressed up?

Does anyone have recommendations for me? Key features wanted.
  • Minimum 3 HDMI inputs
  • Up to Dolby True HD
  • 7.1
  • THX not necessary but nice
  • On screen display of volume with all inputs
  • Upscaling of video to at least 1080i
  • Decent or better basic music play

Price is a consideration, but I can wait and spend more later is needed. I want to get something that will last me a while. (I am upgrading from a 15 year old Sony 5.0 system with Simulated Surround!!) I know it's easy to ask for everything and not get it. The Onkyo's seem really tough to beat when you start looking at the feature set. I can't believe the lack of volume display. Is this something only I am wanting to have on screen?

Thanks for any input.

You havent said anything about what speakers youll be using. As anyone here can tell you each of the recievers youve mentioned will sound different than the next. Your best bet is to find a A/V shop that carries the brand you have and demo, remember to take music your familiar with. If you cant then it will be a gamble relying on the opinion of the majority of Onkyo fanatics of this site.
I wont push any brand as everyone has there preferences, but from what I understand, seperates are the way to go. Thats the way Im going next.

Yes the speakers will certainly make a difference. Initially, I would be powering the old Sony speakers, until I can afford to by some new ones. I have to start somewhere and have chosen the reciever since the one I have currently is so lacking in features.
