Default HDMI reciever that outputs audio

I have an Onkyo RX-SR505 and i connected like this
hdmi input 1 = dvd
hdmi input 2 = cable hd box
hdmi output = tv

now I turned on the receiver and there is no sound output on the hdmi contents but there is on normal radio. I looked in my manual and it says
=======================================
Step 1: Connect your HDMI-compatible TV to the AV receiver’s HDMI OUT jack.
Step 2: Connect your HDMI-compatible player to the AV receiver’s HDMI IN 1 or 2 jack.
Step 3: Connect your HDMI-compatible player to an analog and/or digital audio input on the AV
receiver.
✽ Audio and video signals received via the HDMI IN 1 and 2 jacks are output by the HDMI OUT jack as they
are (HDMI pass-through), so even if you only make the connections in steps 1 and 2, your TV will output
sound. However, if you want to listen through the speakers connected to the AV receiver, in addition to an
HDMI connection, you’ll also need to make a separate analog or digital audio connection.
Step 4: Assign the HDMI IN.
Turn on the AV receiver, and then assign the HDMI IN (see page 38)

Audio and video signals received via the HDMI IN jacks are output only by the HDMI OUT.
======================================

so I see with this receiver I have to run the audio for cable tv and dvd in seperate lines to hear them with my receiver speakers.

I have 2 questions
1) could I just run the audio out from the tv back to the stereo? at least that way I am only running 1 audio input into the stereo, and would this way cause the audio to be less as it is running threw the tv?

2) Is this a common problem or can I find another receiver that will allow speaker output while running hdmi (without the extra audio connection) and how would I find a lost cost buy receiver that does this?

===================
side note. reason I got this tv is so I can get a playstation 3 blu ray to hook up and have it in full 1080 and also so my dvd upscaler will work (it wont upscale copy protected dvd's without using hdmi)

I am not sure about your particular TV, but I know with my Toshiba the only way to get audio out of the TV's output is when the input is the ATSC or QAM tuner. Audio from the HDMI will not be passed out the digital audio out of the TV. I believe this is standard, but again I am not sure about your TV.

This is a common problem/shortcoming of some receivers. There are plenty of other receivers out there that do process the audio over HDMI and send it to the speakers of your system.

I have decided to get a new receiver and have a budget up to $500 or so. Do I have to check the manual of each receiver I might concider just to find out if it plays the audio? or is there some name or version (1.3a) that I just need to look for?

or perhaps some suggestions?

thx for the explaination

The Onkyo TX-SR605/606 are 2 good HDMI 1.3a suggestions in you budget. The 705 is another but is around $550 I think. Just make sure the receiver is NOT HDMI passthrough. The 606 can be had for about $425 shipped or at Circuit City for $429..

Amazon has the 705 for $529 shipped. Nice price on a very nice receiver... I would go 705 if you can..

6th avenue electronics has it for $399.00.

I bought mine from Crutchfield for $449 less than two weeks ago. I'll be seeing if I can get that other $50 back from them. Threaten to return it, see what happens.

I am not 100% sure on all the differences between the 606 and 705. From what I understand the 606 is the replacement upgrade for the 605 with 2 extra HDMI input for a total of 4 (the 705 has 3). The 705 has better video processing with 3 chips vs 1, a bit more power (10w per chn.) and is THX certified (if that matteres to you). You can look at the comparison between the 2 at and see all the differences at:
http://www.us.onkyo.com
Just go to products/receivers on the top, check the 606 and 705 and hit compare for a side by side....

If the extra $100 is a bit too much, the 606 will be fine and the extra HDMI can be a bonus. But the 705 is worth the extra $$ IMO..
