How can anyone watch standard def?

i pretty much understand the connectivity of the 705 ,but i do have a question , with young kids in the house i cant afford to have the receiver on all the time , how can i connect the tv and dvd so that i can hear sound coming from the tv ?

This would be more about your TV and other components than the receiver. Connect the receiver to one input(s) of the TV so that input would always require the receiver on for sound with that input(s) and connect your components directly to the TV on another input(s) so that the sound comes from the TV without the receiver. Your TV should have a way of turning its speakers on or off. When you use the TV you can use the receiver then when you turn it off set it to the simple mode the kids could use that will not use your receiver. A good programmable remote with macros could help to simplify this.
