Default OTA Recording in Hi Def or Standard

Does anyone know if there is a recording medium that can record both hi def and standard def OTA? I use an antenna pickup here in the Atlanta area. I receive 20 or so channels perfectly, about a dozen of which broadcast in hi def depending on the time of day and type of broadcast. I want to be able to record OTA programming but can't seem to find "a box" that can do it unless I have satellite, cable, or a TIVO subscription. I have none of these (and don't want them, either). The DVD and hard drive recorders I've evaluated all seem to handle standard def but are unable to process/store a hi def signal. I have a Mitsubishi WS-65711 (built in tuner) if it helps. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Lee

There are no HD recorders made for the public yet. If you are a professional then you can buy one for big bucks.

You looking for permanent archive or just a DVR?

If DVR, their are boxes such as the LG LST-3410 that are OTA tuners with integrated HD DVR. The 3410 has 2 rf inputs and has ATSC (digital / HD) and NTSC (analog) tuners.

The OTA DVR area is relatively untouched otherwise. See some other posts herein related to some new equipment coming out. Various advantages / constraints.

What kind of media do they use for this type of recorder?

A DVR (digital video recorder) aka PVR (personal video recorder) records to a hard disk drive contained inside it. Limited storage, so you have to replace old stuff with new...

A D-VHS records to a tape cartridge similar to VHS, but digitally in HDTV.

The LG DVR is well liked, but does have the disadvantage it is only capable of tuning digital cable channels that are not encrypted. No CableCard.

Sony has similar products that DO have CableCard & are full digital cable compatible coming out next month.

Actually, my last post was a rhetorical question.

I know that D-VHS is the media that professionals use......but as of yet there is no hardware available for the average consumer to record HD.

RCA has a Scenium DVR 2160, connects via firewire.. Records HD for around $500... wouldn't it record regular channels that come thru the television also?

I bought a brand new D-VHS JVC HD40000 for $280 delivered on EBAY. Is that a large investment for a consumer?

Default If the JVC only has firewire input for hidef what receivers work?

It looks as if the JVC DH40000 only has firewire input for hidef so what receivers work with it? - most of the set top receivers I see have DVI,RGB and Component only for their HD output..-- Is firewire better than DVI?

You're right......I wasn't aware of the 'JVC HM-DH40000' model recorder, which can recored HD programming! I'm sure that some more manufacturers will follow with similar machines soon.

Actually, the trend is toward not producing more DVHS decks. JVC and Mitsubishi have put out several consumer decks each and other manufacturers have licensed these decks for their own branding -- but I don't think any but JVC and Mitsubishi remain on the market.

Because of the impending HD-DVD and Blu-ray recorders, the support for DVHS (which was never really all that strong to begin with) has dropped off very fast. D-Theater, the prerecorded high definition tapes topped out at about 100 releases, but the last release was several months ago and no more new tapes have been announced.

Also, firewire support is very spotty. Because of an FCC mandate, a consumer can request a firewire-enabled cable box, but there is no satellite support for firewire (aside from a very expensive hack), and OTA receivers with firewire are few and far in between.

The recent trend isn't simply against DVHS but against any method of archiving.

And Maicaw, the major difference between firewire and DVI is that DVI is an uncompressed signal that cannot be recorded on consumer equipment. Firewire is a compressed signal that can.
