HR21 and external drive problem - help please?

Hi everyone,

I just upgraded my hr10-250 to hr21 hidef dvr last week. My brother has an hr20 and suggested a seagate free-agent-pro 750 and SIIG esata cable.

I have had no problems with the internal drive whatsoever.

Got the external drive and bought an esata cable (not the one suggested by my brother however).

Problem? The thing locks up within 30-45 minutes if I boot it from the external drive. No buttons work. It is usually stuck on a video screen, as if paused.

I purchased a 1M siig esata cable thinking that was it, and got it today.

same problem.

I rebooted, restarted, and even "reset everything" to force a reformat of the drive.

No luck.

Any ideas?

If you go over to the Directv section, you will see others have had the same issue. I saw posts from 2 different people that have had the freeze up issue you have. People are asking over there if anyone has been able to successfully add an external hard drive to the HR21. Lots of people have been successful with the HR20, but I haven't seen anybody say they have been able to with the HR21.

That's bizarre. I thought the hr20 and hr21 were virtually identical except that the hr20 has the antenna in.

It doesn't make a lot of sense.

So nobody's got an hr21 that works with an external drive??? makes me wonder what the problem is.

Maybe I'll post that exact question over there (or someone can respond to this).

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Turns out the HR21 is incompatible with the seagate free-agent-pro drive controller (although that drive works fine with the HR20).

I got an antec mx1 enclosure (FANTASTIC design - and silent even with fan), and a seagate 1TB drive.

Everything works perfectly now on my HR21.
