Default HDMI Audio Problem - STR-DG810 & HD-A3

Hey Everyone,

I've searched around and can't seem to find a solution to my problem.

I just bought a HD-A3 to use as an upconverting DVD player (and enjoy what I'm sure will end up being some cheap HD-DVD's) I have it connected to my SONY STR-DG810 through HDMI and then from the 810 to my 5 year old XBR via HDMI->DVI Cable.

I get video no problem, but I don' get audio. I've set the receiver to both "auto" and "hdmi-in" as well as use different hdmi slots on the back of the receiver to no avail. I have even gone as far a to use a different cable (known to work) and still nothing.

I have also tinkered with the Audio settings on the HD-A3 and still get nothing.

If anyone can offer some suggestions I would be very grateful

Cheers

Have you tried running an optical cable straight to the receiver from the A3? I don't think your display will pass through the audio.. or at least it doesn't seem so.

Default Some clarrification

Thanks for the reply,

Sorry, I forgot to mention that when I hookup audio to the 810 via optical it works fine.

Also, I'm not trying to get audio from my TV (From my understanding audio wouldn't get there via dvi) I am in fact trying to get audio from the receiver while taking the video to the TV.

I would want the speakers connected to my receiver for all sound and turn off the TV speakers

If I remember right, you need to set the audio output on the A3 to HDMI auto... it is a setting in the HD DVD player setup menu.

You set the Digital Out to HDMI?

Set “Digital Out SPDIF” if using optical cable or “Digital Out HDMI" if using HDMI.

From the Manual:

No sound.
Is the audio cable disconnected? ( page 22)
. Is the volume of the device turned down to the minimum level? Check the volume.
. Switch the audio input of the device connected by the audio cable to the input from the
player.
. Set “Digital Out SPDIF” or “Digital Out HDMI” ( page 53) properly in accordance with
the connected device and connection procedure.
. Change the output resolution ( page 23) so that sound can be heard.
. If using the optical digital output for a Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD or DTS
soundtrack, be sure your AV receiver or processor is set to use the input connected to
your player and is set to decode a DTS bitstream. If your AV receiver or processor does
not support DTS, select PCM output on the player ( page 53).

Ok, Here we go again. I went out and bought a 2nd HD-DVD (We needed one for the bedroom anyway) and I have the same problem with the 2nd player.

I have set-up the HD-DVD player with all 3 options possible for Digital Out HDMI (Auto, PCM and Downmixed PCM) and non of them seem to work

The funny thing is, the HDMI coming from my Digital Cable Box works no problem setup to L-PCM.

I can confirm that the cables work as well as the individual inouts as I've tested them with the above mentioned Digital Cable Box.

I'm so stumpped.

Default Problem Solved

Well, I don't know if anyone is following this thread or not, but I was able to figure out the problem.

I'm using an HDMI -> DVI Cable from the receiver to my TV.

According to sony:

"This issue can occur with an Audio/Video (A/V) receiver that has HDMI Active Intelligence. HDMI communicates with all the HDMI-connected devices and requires authentication (a.k.a. handshake) from each. Since the DVI jack on the TV is not HDMI, authentication cannot occur and causes the A/V receiver to not produce any audio."

I personally think this is stupid, and has caused me to start looking around for a different receiver cause a new TV just isn't really an option.

Anyway.. thought I'd pass this on in case someone has the same or similar problem.

Cheers.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. If you are going receiver shopping, check out the Onkyo line. The TX-SR605, 705 and 805 have everything you need and work great. If you don't mind refurbished units, you can save yourself some money by going to a place like this - http://www.accessories4less.com/make...r-BLACK/1.html
And make sure that you stay with the models ending in 05 as they offer all of the HDMI audio like Dolby TrueHD, DTS MA etc.
