I am having a bit of trouble trying to setup my DVD player to allow progressive scan on my Panasonic TH-58PZ700U. I have a Philips HTS8100 and the instructions implicity states that "The progressive scan video quality is only available when using Y Pb Pr connection and a progressive scan TV is required. " No problem there. My Panny can handle that.
I used the component video cables (red/ blue/green) to connect the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT (Y Pb Pr) jacks on the HTS8100 to the corresponding component video input jacks on the Panasonic. I made sure that I switched my DVD player to output the progressive signal from the menu. When I playback the DVD, I select "Component 1" (that is where I have my cables running into) from the Input Select Menu. However, all I receive is audio and no picture. What am I doing wrong? Upon reading the manual for my TH-58PZ700U, it states that "When equipment (STB, DVD, etc.) is connected to HDMI, COMPONENT or PC, terminals, only audio signals can be obtained. From the output terminals, no video signals can be passed." I do not understand why video signals cannot be obtained. Can someone so kindly explain this for me and let me know what I should do to watch allow progressive scan when playing back my DVDs? Thanks in advance. |

Do you have another device with component out to see if your cables and/or the input on the TV is working? How do you have the audio connected? NO audio is transmitted over component connections.

I am pretty sure the input on the TV is working. I used to have my DVR receiver running into the input before I switched from Component Video to HDMI.
The audio from the HTS8100 is being supplied via a HDMI cable. One thing I notice is that HDMI is illuminated in the display panel of my DVD player even when the TV set has been switched to Component 1. My HDMI cable is inputted into my "HDMI 1" connection on the back of my TV. I am not sure why I hear audio when I switch to "Component 1" input on the TV menu. Please advise. |

This is just a wild guess, and I may be interpreting your setup wrong, but it sounds like you have both HDMI and component connecting your DVD to your monitor. Otherwise you wouldn't be getting the DVD audio from HDMI, right?
Try removing the HDMI cable between the DVD and TV entirely, using only component and its associated audio cables. See if that makes a difference. It's possible that if the DVD player sees the HDMI as active (because it has a cable plugged into it), it doesn't output to the component (that's how my camcorders work). The HDMI light is probably on because it sees the cable. That sentence from your TV's manual sounds like it was translated by someone who knows neither English nor Japanese... taken literally it seems to say that video via HDMI or Component is not possible, and that can't be right. |

The problem is probably with your set up of the DVD player. Some DVD players require you to perform more than one step to get progressive scan output. (Some even require that component-video output be activated first). You need to go through your DVD players set up step by step. |

This is backwards compared to my Philips DVD upconverting player. To use the RGB cables is to have only 480i resolution. In order to get the other resolutions the HDMI has to be used. In my HDTV's manual (Sharp) stated that not all HDMI connectors included audio since many were just recently converted from DVI. True here too, so in addition to the HDMI cable, I also have to connect a set of audio cables too (strange), other than that this works fine.

Try this method. Acces the menu in your dvd player to alter the signal from interlace to progressive. Since your new hdtv can't recognise the analog interlace signal, use the composite video output from the player to connect to the input of the hdtv. (Initially, your signal from the dvd player is still in 480i)
- Select the composite video input on your tv. A welcome screen should appeared on your tv now. - Then access your dvd player menu. Select the video output. Select component. - Then pick either interlace or progressive and press enter. Once y're done, switch your tv back to component, your hdtv should recognise the altered signal now. |

All valid points. Thanks for the responses! When I get some time in the near future, I will try everyones suggestions and report back with the conclusion.
On a side note, could it be possible that the COMPONENT VIDEO OUT jacks on the HTS8100 are inoperative? Is it unheard of for this to happen? Is there any way I can test the jacks? Thanks. aviation76 |

…well, I tried the various suggestions and here is what occurred:
I followed "acgold7" suggestion: I was able to obtain video utilizing the RGB cables, but the picture was 480p. Similar to "e_buff's" Philips DVD player. Even after I switched the menu on the DVD player to 1080p 'progressive scan'…it still read 480p. One part of the HTS8100's instructions states to "Make sure that the TVs progressive scan mode is turned off (or set to interlaced mode.)" prior to setting up the DVD player for progressive scan. I could not find any place in the manual or on the menu screen to perform this on my Panasonic TH-58PZ700U. I also tried "hnleong's" suggestion but still no luck. I noticed while only utilizing an HDMI cable and setting the DVD to output progressive scan, I switched between 1080i and 1080p and both pictures looked the same. I verified signal resolution by using the "recall" feature on my TV remote. Should one notice a discernable difference between 1080i and 1080p DVD video? Oh well...I guess I am content with my current picture. Just wanted to make my home theater experience a little better. Suggestions are always welcome. Thanks for all your help. |

If your TV properly de-interlaces, which yours does, you will see no difference between a 1080i and p signal. Your TV de-interlaces the i signal to p and since the source is 1920x1080 that is what you see, 1080p.
