Upgrade hard disk of Motorola DVR

Maybe it is a common question, but it is possible to upgrade the hard disk capacity of a Motorola DVR 3412?

If yes, Can I just buy a PC formatted Hard Disk and interchange it with the Motorola HD?

Or maybe can I use an external HD and plug it on one of the USB ports?

In the United States, at least, those actions are generally not permitted.

You may want to look into purchasing a TiVo. Both upgrading to a larger hard drive and using an external hard drive are allowed and supported.

I would contact both the cable provider then the Motorola people and ask the same question. They will lead you in the right direction.
