Default HDTV with tuner do I need an HD box

All new 2007 HDTV set come with a tuner. I have a regular cable (13 channels for $12 a month, but i also receive some more channels because I believe the cable co messed it up. I even received HBO until it went digital). I do not have a cable box at all as I plug my cable to my DVD tuner. If I buy a new HDTV with tuner do I need to 1) buy the additional digital package that my cable co offer, 2) buy an additional HD box, 3) both, 4) or just plug into my TV and scan for HD channels?
I have been told that I can connect the cable to the HDTV tuner, scann for stations and recieve local programing in HD, but I also read that it is impossibel because all HD is scrambled. What if I get one of this HD filter? Can someone let me know how this works?

It all depends on your local cable company. I have Comcast in the Chicago market and they send the locals in HD unencrypted. Now to get ESPNHD or HBOHD, I need the HD cable box or a cable card. So I'd check with your local cable company. If they send the HD locals unencrypted, just make sure your new HDTV has a built in QAM tuner.

Does your TV have a QAM Tuner? You will need one to get the HD channels from the cable . . .
