Default eSATA with 8300HD

Anyone use an external HD with their 8300HD. According to cablevision, I can add one, but the Western Digital they recommend seems tough to find and I have never heard of Apricorn brand. Anyone have any recommendations of what they've used, or what to avoid? I'm not very "Techy" when it comes to details of PC hardare SATA, SARA, etc.

Here is the Cablevision link:

Far as I know, Apricorn makes empty SATA boxes; you buy a bare drive, buy a box (Apricorn) and put the drive in the box. As DIY goes, this is pretty simple. Generally should save one 30-50 or so bucks, something like that.

While any HDD that IS a real hard drive SHOULD work, there does seem to be an issue with the software on the cable box. A guy over on AVS is keeping a DB listing what works and what doesn't. Which would NOT be needed if the cableco's software was decent... but it ain't.

I would think the Apricorn includes everything for $180..

I'll check out AVS later, you don't happen to know the path to find this thread, do you?

I just bought the WD MY DVR Expander 500GB drive, works great. You can go cheaper if you DYI, but not that much cheaper. Still, if you want to go that route, check out the AVS thread. At the beginning there's a link to the SARA and Passport db's. Keep in mind if you have the latter OS you will lose the ability to FF, pause, RW live tv, as I understand it (I have SARA).

I tried to post the link but it keeps getting cut off so it won't work. I have no idea what that's all about.

Harold

Thanks Harold....you can't post links to AVS for whatever reasons. Anyway, I found that thread last night on AVS. Based off the pictures in the first post of that thread,my guide looks like the SARA version. Where did you find the My DVR Extender. I can't find it. Even doing searches for it. I emailed WD last night because I can't even order it through their website.

Yeah, I saw that about 30 minutes ago.....but in searching, it was announced last week that this drive is compatible with the new Tivo Series 3 DVR's. All of the articles say the price is $199.

I was also checking the AVS site mentioned by two of the posters above and a lot of people have used this combo without problem

The safe side of me would rather use the ones recommended by Cablevision, but Cablevision also says any eSATA drive should work. The combo here would save me about $60.

did you buy from WD? There is no "add to cart" when you go to the page.

Yeah, I bought onsite. That's weird. Sometimes they're out of stock for a wk or so, but it'll say so. Not sure what's up.

well they just announced it is compatible with the Tivo 3 series, so I am sure it will be back up soon. Now though I am leaning towards what I posted in post #7.
