Greetings,
I was wondering if there is any way to access the recorded material on the HDD of the 8300HD and copying it to a computer for later burning to a DVD. Thanks! Alex |

Hello Alex,
I recently upgraded to a Sony 40" Bravia LCD HDTV and I ordered the 8300HD DVR through comcast (leased). I called Comcast to ask about increasing the hard drive capacity two times and I spoke to 2 different techs. The first one told me you could add unlimited additional storage via the usb 2.0 port. (?? not sure I trust his answer). The second tech told me No to adding storage, but you could download recorded programs to a PC with the firewire port. I talked to a 3rd tech today (he had a major attitude, and he told me that he could not answer my question). I did read on another forum that there is an FCC decree that if a port exists, it must be useable. Can't verify that either. That's why I joined this forum. My320 gig 8300 DVR fills up very fast and I travel a lot for work. Just returned from a 4 day business trip last night to find that half of my recording selections did not record. There is a SATA port on theback, I'm going to research that next. If yo want to call comcast it's 1-800-comcast. Hope this was some help. If anyone out there knows for sure about adding external storage please PM me! Thanks to all! |

If you use the S-video output of the 8300 to connect to a DVDR, you can feed the program to a DVDR and burn direct to a DVD. You can buy a DVDR for $120 - $200. |

Thanks for your replies. I live in Canada so I lease my box from Rogers Cable, hence we're not under the jurisdiction of the FCC. I've heard things about the firewire and it's something I might consider. I guess my last ditch effort will be to s-video stream it to a DVDR, but I would've prefered to get it until my notebook so I can do some editing of the files before I burn them. I've been doing some additional research and nobody seems to have a straight answer about whether or not it is even possible.

Down here, 8300HDs mostly CAN be expanded via an additional HDD by using the eSATA port on the back. No cable company actually will support that connection as the software is way buggy. Those with SARA mostly work, those with Passport have a major known bug that the cable guys seem 100% unwilling to fix. There IS a third software going around that supports but does NOT have the Passport bug, but it is being deployed LONG, LONG before it is ready (it's actually an alpha version being used in production).

I would like to buy an SA Explorer 8300HD unit from EBAY but don't know if it will work with Rogers cable in Canada. Does anyone know how this works or the likely hood of it working?
Thanks Eddy |

I want to connect my DVDR/VCR to my TWC Explorer 8300HD via the S-Video hookups. I can do it using the S-Video connections in the back of the cable box and DVDR. Does this usually work and how does the pic look like usually, pretty decent?
Thanks, Diane |

PimpMyDVR provides simple, plug and play products that allow you to upgrade the storage capacity of your existing DVR, such as the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD (our products work with DVRs running the SARA or Passport software). If you can connect a CD Player to your stereo, you can do this. We take care of all of the complicated configuration and ship you a device with two cables. You plug one cable in to the power supply and the other into the back of the DVR (SATA port). That's it. Your DVR's storage will instantly increase by 60 hours of High Definition Storage capacity. All products come with a 30 day money back guarantee (excluding shipping) and a full 1 year warranty. We are offering 20% off our regular prices through the end of November. Please send us an email at Support@PimpMyDVR.com if you have any questions or visit us at www.PimpMyDVR.com |

I'm pretty sure there's no such rule. There is a rule that the cable company must supply you with a box that has a working firewire port, but so far as I've heard, that rule is complied with by supplying some box other than the 8300. Perhaps the 3250, iirc.

Yes, it works; I've been doing it for over a year using a Motorola/Fios box and a Philips DVDR. The quality of SD is pretty much what you see from the provider; the quality of HD, because it is played back in windowbox leaves a lot to be desired.

I hope I'm posting this in the right place--Recently I got a SA 8300HD DVR from Time Warner. I am wondering about shortcuts to use with the remote control that I used to do with the older DVRs and remotes. Does anyone know of any quick ways to see program listings in the future (jump forward 1+ days, etc.), plus any other shortcuts to do via the remote for onscreen control? I can't find anything published on this at all. |

No, it doesn't work. The 8300 (or 8300HD) will recognize it, and attempt to format it but won't be able to format it.
