I'm curious if anyone here actually has this receiver and hooked it up to their PS3 yet. I notice that some people have reported that this receiver does not support the 5.1 uncompressed surround sound. However, when I contacted tech support, they claim that it is support over the HDMI cable. I just bought this unit for 210 after tax and shipping from sony and I hope it works with my PS3. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you sure that it was only 2 channel PCM with an HDMI connection? I know this is usually the case with the S/PDIF (optical or dig.coax) audio connections but not with HDMI.
Good luck!

The manual swears it does multi-channel audio, so I hooked up my XA1 HD DVD player & Dish network receiver via HDMI and my TV via HDMI>DVI cable (the PS3 is coming later this week). I spent almost 3 hours fiddling with it last night. I get video just fine, but absolutely no audio. I have the 5.1 speakers hooked up fine, as the only time I got an audible peep out of the receiver is when I ran the "Auto Calibration" test - you connect an included microphone and run the test and it outputs various test tones & it supposedly calibrates the speaker settings for your room layout & acoustics. The one bug may be that my HDTV only has DVI digital input. It's been working fine with a HDMI switcher with the XA1 & Dish 211 connected via HDMI and then HDMI>DVI cable to the TV. But the STR-DG710 manual says "We do not recommend using a HDMI-DVI conversion cable . . . . the sound and/or image may not be output". But then the SonyStyle site's troubleshooting guide talks about using DVI and says to run composite RCA stereo jacks to the TV to get audio to the TV speakers in addition to the receiver & speakers. Alot of misinformation on the specs - I notice the SonyStyle specs claim that it has 3 s-video inputs and actually it has none. Not that I need s-video, but something that I notice. Anyway, I'll work on it some more, but so far I'm not impressed. |

Welcome to the forum! And it was a great FIRST post too!
Try checking if their is a setting in the receiver that allows different sound settings for HDMI sound. I know there is a setting in my Denon HDMI receiver that does, but I have never owned a Sony receiver (other than one I returned after a couple of hours). Sony uses "optimized for PS3 & Blu-ray playback over HDMI" strickly as a marketing term since with most current BD players the decoders will need to be in the receiver since the BD players don't have the HD audio decoders built-in them. This is starting to change with a couple of the announced BD players coming in the next few months. None to date either out or announced will have the DTS-HD Master Audio decoders in them. They are starting to come with Dolby TrueHD (DtHD), but there are only something like 2 discs that use this codec for the soundtrack. One is a Jazz BD. Fox is using DTS-HD MA exclusively for their HD audio soundtrack but nothing out there yet (BD players) can decode it, and it does not seem promising that any will in the near-term. BD fans can only hope that Fox changes over to DtHD soundtracks quickly so HD audio can be usefull and BD movies are not limited to just uncompressed LPCM soundtracks which waste a lot of disc space.

Yes, I've been enjoying HD DVD for a year now, and among the many reasons I prefer HD DVD is that it works perfectly with my older but perfectly good equipment. With the 5.1 analog output, I've been able to enjoy every HD DVD audio tract, including TrueHD, on my 6 yr. old receiver. A HDMI>DVI cable works fine for my 3 yr. Sony 57" CRT rear projection HDTV with 1080i. Well, FW 2.1 threw the DVI connection for a loop, but they made up for it with 2.2. While I still prefer HD DVD I recently decided to go dual format to enjoy those BD only releases I want to see & hear. There's a real glut of PS3's on eBay, and I picked a new 20GB model for just over $400, so that made going dual format within my budget. Unfortunately, no analog outs on the PS3 means I need to upgrade to a HDMI receiver. Anyways, back to topic. You know what - it is the HDMI>DVI cable. By accident, I turned off the TV while playing an HD DVD and Voila! I suddenly had sound. I only get HDMI audio when my TV with DVI is switched off. So, the good news for folks wanting a comparatively inexpensive HDMI receiver, this model does work - if your display has HDMI. I played the DVE (Digital Video Essentials) HD DVD with TrueHD audio and it worked perfectly on my 5.1 speakers. The receiver's LED displayed "PCM", as I have the XA1 HDMI output set to PCM. I'm going to try a few more tricks - I have an HDMI switcher and HDMI>DVI adapter to see if I can "fool" the receiver. If not, it's going back. Sorry Sony, I'm not buying a new $2000 TV just to get your receiver to work.

It's great that you found out WHY you had no sound over HDMI. Did you try running component for the video & HDMI for the audio with the PS3? I cannot remember if the PS3 allows both to output at the same time.

No, I never sprang for the $20+ adapter cord you need for component on the PS3 - I never planned on having to connect via component. I did run the included composite video cable and got the PS3 querying the 710 via HDMI. It confirmed this model is limited to only 2 channel PCM, via any input. My 6 yr. old Sony receiver can do that via optical. That was the last straw for Sony receivers for me. I took it back and got an Onkyo 604. Onkyo does it right, it works perfectly for HDMI audio to my speaker system and video to my display via DVI.
