Default DVD Recorders with internal hard drive discontinued?

Sorry, I misstated my first post.

It semes that all DVD recorders with an internal hard drive have been discontinued. Is there a legal issued involved? All the new DVD recorders coming out have no internal hard drive. I'm looking for one that upconverts, has HDMI connection, has internal hard drive and has programming guide(Tivo-type).

Thanks,

Where are the recordings stored if there's no internal hard drive? Do they need an external one? With all the wires necessary to attach the DVR to the monitor/TV, a disk player and decent sound system; a USB cable to an external drive and the "wall wart" to power the drive are NOT a welcome addition.

Default Dvd Recorders

The new DVD recorders only record directly to the DVD disk.
You can not record without a DVD disk in the machine.
All DVD recorders with an internal hard drive have been discontinued.

I spoke with a representative from Panasonic. She all new DVD recorders will not have an internal hard drive. Panasoniq shows the units with internal hard drives on their web site, but they are not for sale.

When DVD Recorders had hard drives, they can be marketed as DVR/DVD Recorders. Third party DVR is a very problematic CE category. The problem is that the folks who "watch TV" to the extent a DVR makes a lot of sense typically are cable or satellite customers. So there is a serious issue with compatibility with what the MSO does. Take the TiVo3, it depends on cable cards and those carry some real limitations compared to the cable companies STBs.

So it don't strike me that odd that they seem to be focusing the boxes only on DVD Recorder functionality.

Default Internal Hard Drives Discontinued

The problem is Digital Rights Mangement. When the DVD recorders machines were able to "Upconvert" to higher resolution, the movie studios forced the manufacturers to remove the internal hard drives.

Me be in your court PFC5,,,just hook me old computer up to a firewire device and DRM turns to ORM (oblioman right's management). Not to profit, not to share, but to record what me wants to record, watch it when me has a moment. Follywood is grasping or gasping to keep up with new tech. The MPAA & RIAA wish to tug our cajones over our eyes to make us blind to their tactics. But meself be peeping, sometimes have to squint but still be fruitfull when bypassing drm.

I think they are still out there. What I don't understand is why there are so few DVRs (other than TiVo and cable companies) with hard drives. If TiVo is doing can't be any legal issues?

TiVo and Replay started off like gangbusters. I suspect the main "threat" to them was the cable guys essentially getting into the same business. Essentially, the cable guys have a product that is really quite functional while the TiVo guys have slightly smoother software and a few features that are "better" than what the cable guys offer.

Add in that the cable guys beat TiVo to market by a good 2 years with a dual tuner HD capable DVR.

Before HD (as in my getting it), I made an evaluation and found that the money differential was more than enough to be willing to "give up" some minor things (like a 14 day schedule w/TiVo, but only 7 with cable). PLUS, by going cable, I had infinite warranty AND the ability to move to new equipment for no cost.

Now that TiVo DOES have a dual HD tuner model, I find the price differential to be even bigger than what it had been.

5 years ago I felt that TiVo's best business model was to supply their software to the cable guys. I think it was a mistake for a deal NOT to be reached, although I don't have near enough information to say why the deal never came about. That does NOT change my opinion a deal SHOULD have been made.

I suspect all this certainly plays into the "why not more DVRs?"

I think if TIVO does continue to lose sales and gets into trouble financially they WILL end up making a deal to "lease" the software to cable companies.

The pisser is that it sure seems they hit spots like that throughout their history. However, I think that game is lost at this point. TWC is going through a massive effort at creating their own software, and I suspect 2 of the reasons they are doing it have zero to do with what TiVo does (compatibility with SDV and having an OCAP compliant platform).
