Default PS3 v stand alone blu ray player

When the PS3 is launched here in the UK in late March it will be cheaper than a stand alone blu ray player.

How good is the PS3 at playing the disks compared to a stand alone player? I have heard that the PS2 was not as good as a DVD player when that was launched.

I am only interested in it for playing disks.

What do you think. PS3 or wait for the players to become cheaper?

I also wondered the same thing as footynutguy. I was debating on buying a PS3 for the blue ray player, and b/c i like games i figured i might buy a few games for it over the years.

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing guy. I own a Samsung BD-P1000, but it is getting returned ASAP. You see, none of the current BD standalones have HDMI 1.3 capability and can NEVER be upgraded. Therefore, you will never be able to hear advanced audio tracks on these players beyond the PCM uncompressed 5.1

However, the next gen players should be out in March, and will have HDMI 1.3 from what we've been told. That means that the $1000 standalone you buy now, will be obsolete in a few short months. I didn't realize any of this when the player was purchased.

I am going format neutral, and just decided to buy the Toshiba HD-XA2 for HD-DVD playback. The upconverson of SD DVD on it is on par with DVD upconverters that are in the $4,000 range. Also, it is renowned for CD playback as well.

Since I have purchased about $200 in BD titles and want to be able to use them, and any future exclusive BD titles, I also want to find another player. I don't want to wait until March if I don't have to.

So, I am also wondering about the PS3 as just a BD player. Is it HDMI 1.3 capable? I just want the best SQ and PQ possible in a Blu-ray, but I want it to be future proof too. I don't care about any other features beyond that.

I use my for BR movie playback and it works like a charm. Pickup the PS3 remote when it comes available in the UK.

My PS3 has been great so far with blu-ray. No problems. It just takes a little while to memorize the buttons on the controller.

Yes the PS3 has HDMI 1.3

But some of the Hi Def DVD players offer Analog Output so if you wanted the advanced audio, it is there (must have a receiver that has Analog Inputs - many have this). The Toshiba XA1 and XA2 both offer this.

HDMI 1.3 offers 2 big improvements:

1. DEEP COLOR - greater color range (no HDTV's have this yet)

2. Advanced Audio THROUGH the HDMI connector (must have a receiver that can decode this - coming soon)

Other than the PS3 and the HD-XA2, no other devices are equipped with 1.3... yet so it isn't a huge factor now and who knows when it will be
