Default Transfer HD recordings to external drive?

Is there currently a HD DVD Recorder where you can transfer recordings to another external hard drive?

Yes and no. The Scientific Atlanta SA8300HD can be connected to an external drive but as an expansion drive. In other words, the capacity is increased with the use of 2 drives (operating as one) in a seamless operation. Programs can be partly on one and partly on the other. There is no possibility to access one drive over the other.

But with an activated Firewire, some SA8300HD and Motorola DVR owners have been able to archive recordings to a computer hard drive. The 5C DTCP protocol needs to be set at "Copy Free" or "Copy Once" in order for that to work.

And if the Firewire works and the 5C protocol allows, you can use a D-VHS deck to copy HD programs.

Eventually, Toshiba will introduce a HD DVD player/recorder and so will Sony with the BR technology. Expect that to be via Firewire for I don't believe there is a copy protection protocol for USB.

I cannot speak of other systems, but DISH DVRs are linux based. If you remove the drive from the 622 and put it in a linux machine you can transfer the files.

Really?? Have you actually done this? Not 100% sure how many disk formats Linux supports, but it couldn't be the basic one, UDF, because even the m$ OS reads that.

I have generally speculated that DVRs use a proprietary disk format and essentially part one in preventing access to recorded files. That plus encryption to satisfy the copyright holders. That's why I find it surprising that one could get access to the files so easily.

On the other hand, is it possible to transfer recordings from the SkyHD Box to another hard drive?
The Sky box has hard drive sockets and also USB at the back?
