I have a Sony KDL-V32XBR1 32" BRAVIA LCD that is hooked with Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR from Comcast via HDMI input. I am quite impressed with the quality of image but I am VERY disappointed with their closed caption. Their closed caption is very chopped and very small font. I tried to make it large but it makes no big difference. I would prefer to use my Sony LCD’s closed caption as it is more smoothly and bigger font. Is there a way to override the DVR’s closed caption and use Sony’s closed caption?
If I purchase my own DVR like Sony DHG-HDD500 HD, will it make any difference? Is it better to rent a DVR from a cable company or own it? If I decided to purchase a DVR, what do I need to include like cable card? Will Comcast provide one? Thanks in advance! |

I would say the the TV's CC facility is only usable when the cable or OTA connection is connected to the TV for the NTSC analog signal and the ATSC tuner.
Should Comcast accept the Cable Card, the present one is for one way communication and you would therefore not have VOD, IPG or PPV movies. As for purchasing vs owning the cable DVR, research what the cost would be and divide that by the monthly amount you are paying for the DVR and you will get the number of months to amortize it after which it becomes free. In my book, a good SA DVR is worth to be purchased. I own two of them.

SA8300 or SA8300HD DVR's cannot be purchased by individuals in the USA. They can only be leased by cable companies that offer these models.
I don't know how much a SA8300HD DVR would cost, even if they could be bought, but within 1 year I returned 2 DVR's to my cable company to be replaced because of various problems. Also, if my cable company gets a newer model DVR, I can just drive down and exchange boxes. For me, the insurance of knowing that I can always have the newest technology, and not be bothered by expired warranties or a defective box, gives me peace of mind.
