Hi, I have been recording tv with a vcr since the stone ages! BUt now its time to move on... I know of Tivos but I dont wish to subscribe to any servouses.. I just want to be able to record shows, digital cable and HDTV to a harddrive for future watching, another pluse would be one that uses a standard HDD from a PC so I coud swap them...
Any such device out there?

When you rent an HD-DVR from your cable company, there are no extra fees... it's only $5 per month more than the no-dvr STB.

I acquired a Sony DHG-HDD500 hard-drive recorder and I love it! They also have a less expensive version (DHG-HDD250 with 250GB hard drive vs. the 500GB capacity of the HDD500). Both can record SD and HDTV from either cable (or satellite) and off-the-air. Both use TV Guide (free) which gives you program information for 8 days in advance with the one-click record scheduling capability. You can also schedule recordings manually if you really want to set up something a long time in advance. Highly recommend it.
