Default Long time, a decade in fact

Hi,

I've not posted or logged on here in a decade. Good to see y'all are still here. Anyway, I just replaced my old Denon AVR-1706 receiver with the new AVR-X3300c. The only issue with the 1706 was the remote no longer worked perfectly.... but that was enough to drive my wife batty, and there's been much progress in audio gear since then.

The 3300 is awesome!! Right now it's playing Art Blakey on Siriusxm Real Jazz, and I love it. I'm also setting up voice commands via the Denon http command protocol. So far I can tell it to mute, to change inputs, to change volume, to turn on and off by zone.... I will hopefully evolve to multiple commands in one. So that I could be entertaining a party and have the music mostly in the dining room, and then when we seat people at the table to eat I say "ok google, dinnertime" and it re-balances the volume of the two zones to move the music predominantly into the living room (it's better to have the music in the other room to allow conversation while preserving the quality of sound that can only occur at a certain volume).

To have FMHD, Pandora, Sirius, and all these other sources baked-in is a huge thing. And another awesome thing is the ability to mostly delete the 'announcer' channel on sporting events. I watched an NHL game and a college football bowl game last night, and it was just terrific to not have to hear the voiceovers and feel like I was actually at the arena and at the stadium.

But Miles Davis All Blues is playing, so that's enough of me chatting

Coyote, super nice Denon unit you have. It sounds like you are a music lover, where I am a HD TV movie watcher.

If TV broadcasting along with TV movies were ever upgraded to 4K of some sort, then I would buy a 4K TV. My Denon S910W, now their S920W with cheaper price, has been terrific. I work everything in conjunction with Logitech's Harmony 650 programmable remote.

The music source I use is Att's u-Verse with the wide selection that is offered for occasional listening, in my basement man cave.

Enjoy that 3300 to the MAX! Way to go.

I'm good with the TV for now. After the Xmas tree leaves (this weekend), when I set the furniture back to its 'standard' positions, I will do the Denon speaker configuration using their microphone. We already watched one movie and it sounded great; after proper balancing, it'll sound even better.

But yeah, even though TV is not that important to me, 4K might prompt me to get a 65" or larger screen - along with the coordinated LED backlight set that makes the screen seem to extend out into the room.

I quote myself, I want you to quote me....

Using Tasker and the intents from AVRdroid, I'm now able to use my voice to (mostly) eliminate the announcers from televised sporting events. You lower the center channel, and crank up the surround channels.... it's waaaay cool to say "ok google, sports on" and within a few seconds Jim Nantz disappears

After a bit of work, AVRdroid is not the way. It opens but never closes its telnet connection, thereby clobbering Denon' s own app. Better path is the send/expect Tasker plugin, which sends telnet commands then disconnects immediately.

Had lost ARC between Vizio p55c1 and x2100w.
CEC would not see the Denon anymore . Just when I was about to give up and go toslink the Denon got a firmware update. ARC restored. 4K Vudu and Netflix through the surround again.

Today on my S910W I switch my audio from DD+Surround to the newer DTS:X even though HBO content is DD and all others. I don't know if I am hearing a better sound field with better immersive sensation, or my ears are playing tricks with my 5.1 System.

I was wondering if anyone else is using the newer DTS:X on its own and if you notice a difference. There is not much DVD movie content with with the newer DTS:X. I believe it would require a DVD player with DTS:X firmware for full speaker effect through ones capable AVR.

Anyway, switched my equipment Audio to DTS:X even though TV cable format is in DD. Center channel seems a bit more distinct, or it could be me?? Anyone else want to pitch in?

Some more followup: I deleted AVRdroid entirely. I had to reset the X3300 twice to clear things. Now it's working wonderfully. It responds perfectly to the Echo/Alexa commands I've created, including the telnet command that sets sports audio speaker levels, and the iPad app is working perfectly too.

But it turns out the mid-bass on one of my speakers is blown, so trying to do the audio setup with the mic balks. So now I'm torn on how to go forward. A pair of Definitive Promonitor 800 speakers is $250 or so; for another $240, I could get an entire ProCinema 600 series set, and thereby gain another sub along with a pair of monitors for 7.1 configuration.

Or I could just send in the speaker to DT for repair. I hear their customer service is top notch.

coyote,

Nice you have the 3300 all set up and working like it should be. Puts a smile on your face!

Speaking on a speaker, I'm looking to replace my center speaker with Klipsch Reference Dual 5-1/4" by this summer.

Yeah, voice command is awesome. There are still things that need to be done via remote of some sort, but virtually every "regular command" that we would give it is now by voice. (THis will spare us the issue of a non-functional Denon remote in the future lol)

Oh, and I failed to clarify earlier that I'm doing it all via Alexa and IFTTT, of which Alexa hears commands far better than a tablet running google voice recognition. When you first think "voice control? Of something that is making loud noise???" you think it seems senseless. But when you do it and Alexa has no trouble hearing your commands even as the music is playing, it is pure magic.

I ended up emailing Def.Technologies about the speaker. We'll see what they say.

I had not played around with incoming audio sound from our Att U-verse to the HD Channels....Just off and on the past year.
I had the receiver audio set for DD+Surround. Last night I changed the audio setting to DD only.

By doing that, I learned that HBO, Starz, Cinemax,,etc..U-verse had some movie HD channels coming in with DTS:X. to my 5.1 system. My AVR screen said DTS:X, so assume that was coming out of my speakers. The center speaker seamed to have a crisper/clearer sound with DTS:X. I made some other audio adjustments over the months with finalizing last night too. Cool!!

It does take some playing around with the Denon and the new DTS:X is a little better to my ears. I wonder what it would sound like with a DVD movie with DTS:X. My DVD players are not Blue Ray, which might have DTS:X capabilities.

Anyway, after a year, I have the audio sound adjustments to what I like. Like you with voice commands and what not all set up.

I took it a step further last night. I have a phone with an ir blaster... so I got the app with the Tasker plugin, and added the ability to control the tv and cable box. "Alexa, trigger tv channel 212" powers on the cable box to that channel and powers on the tv to the cable input.... and then powers on and sets up sports audio on the AVR. All the movie channels invoke movie audio.

Never tried any of that. I try to keep the system wife friendly so I just stick with a Harmony.

Three cheers for Definitive Technologies!! I have a surround system I got from them years ago, long out of warranty. One of the midbass drivers is blown. They are sending a replacement driver FREE OF CHARGE. All I need do is install it (not a problem). They were pleasant to speak with, helpful.... they have restored my faith in customer service.

And given that they sound fantastic, I can do nothing but heartily recommend you look into Definitive if you are purchasing new speakers. Seriously. You can't go wrong with them.
