Default direct TV HD DVR

I have a HD receiver for my Direct TV. I want to upgrade to a HD DVR but I have a question. I was told by a Direct TV tech support rep. that I would have to have to a phone line hooked up to the HD DVR 24/7 for it to work. He said the receiver uses the phone line to do monthly upgrade and without these upgrades the HD DVR would stop working. Is this true? I do not have a house phone only a cell phone. I was told by a friend if I take the HD DVR to someone’s house that has a phone line and use it for the set up, the HD DVR would work from there on. Is this true? I know Direct TV has always told customers that they need a phone line hooked to any receiver 24/7 but I know this is not true because I never have. Anyone got any experience with not hooking up a phone line to your HD DVR. Thanks for the help.

The HDDVR has to be hooked up to a phone line on the install.

i have one and all you have to do is take it to a friends house hook up to the tv plug his phone line in and then go to messages and setup\settings\phone\make daily call now then with in 5-10 min the call will be done take home and you are set do the samething every few months

they will tell you that the phone must be in because tivo wants to study what you are watching
