Default Sony str-dn1000 receiver GUI question

I, very recently, purchased a Sony kdl-52v5100 TV and a Sony str-dn1000 receiver. I have a Directv hd dvr and a Philips Bluray player attached to the receiver via hdmi and the one hdmi cable directly to the tv. I have 2 questions.

1: When I activate the GUI menu, after about 10 seconds it fades to less than 50% brightness. I chatted with Sony for about 1/2 hour the other day and after numerous tests they wanted me to hook the TV up to the receiver with a component cable. I did that and couldn't get video. They said the fading problem is either the hdmi cable or the receiver. So question one is: does that sound right? Is the dimming concern a problem with the receiver or hdmi cable? Could the TV be causing the fading? There are times the brightness of the GUI comes back for a bit, then it fades again.

2: Why couldn't I get video from the component cables? Am I asking too much of the receiver by asking it to translate the hdmi input into the component output? A problem with the receiver?

I would exchange that receiver in a hurry for another less problematic brand.

Well, I love the receiver and maybe the problems are with the hdmi cable.

99% of the time it is NOT the HDMI cable. Sony makes some of the most problematic and failure prone A/V receivers in the industry...

I don't know of any receiver that will take an HDMI input and then output via Component. If you want to use Component into the TV, you will need to input to the receiver via Component.

Thank you very much. That's what I was looking for. I just got my first flat screen hdmi compatible TV around Christmas and am still a newbie in that regard. It is greatly appreciated.
