Now that we have discussed the question based on the OP criteria, of
" Ive been wanting to buy a HDTV recently", we can also ask the question regarding folks who want to want to simply reuse their existing analog TV's. And those who had the foresight to take advantage of the Government coupons to buy a converter box, get to join the digital conversion for $10.00 or so. And even at $60 dollars a converter box is far cheaper than a new television. Due to the digital conversion they will still get a perfect picture for those channels they receive, it may be only 480 scan lines, but buying a digital ready TV by itself will not increase the number of channels that are over the digital cliff. And at $10.00 for a converter box, and multiple hundreds for a new digital TV, its a user choice if the 720 or 1080 scan lines that merely provide extra picture sharpness are worth the money. And a few smart people who value content over scan lines take advantage of a huge drop in prices for large screen TV's of the analog type by buying on the used market. At the end of the day, IMHO, its an individual choice.

In my case my HDTV's are stand alone, no home theater options used by me. But I should point out that there is nothing wrong with others spending the extra bucks to get those home theater effects, its their money and their choice. No one should promote the myth that new HD TV's are in any way inferior to their older style analog counterparts, its just that new digital sets have extra options that some may want to take advantage of. As to why I am a member of a HD forum, I am mainly interested in ways to economically get more channels. And if my viewpoints accidentally help others better understand their options, I make no apologies. Extra scan lines are only ONE of the many benefits of the digital conversion. As for those that still question the digital conversion itself, the train done left that station four months ago, and its not going to back now.
