Default problem when switching from hdtv to sdtv

hey guys, i have a quick question for you. whenever i switch from an hdtv station to an sdtv station my screen gets a light purple haze over it and does not look like normal. i then have to switch inputs to get the channel to come in clearly. the hdtv receiver is plugged into hdmi 1. so i have to switch to hdmi 2 (ps3 is plugged in here but not turned on) and back to hdmi1 via the controller for the station to come in clearly without the purple haze over the picture. this problem doesn't happen when i switch from sdtv to hdtv.

i have cox cable and my television is a toshiba regza 32" 720p hdtv.
model number on the tv is 32HL67U if that helps. my hdtv receiver is a motorola.

thanks.

That is a HDMI HDCP handshake issue ans is common. In order to eliminate it use component cables (red, green, blue) from your cable box to the TV. You would also need to run separate audio cables as well.

The picture quality will be the same but since it is an analog connection, so to speak, there are no handshake issues.

You'd think at this point we'd be done with cable box/HDMI problems, but I guess that's what one gets for thinking.

L2W is right. The component hookup will solve your problem -- and do so with no compromise in picture quality. If you are using an external audio system, it wouldn't be absolutely necessary to hook up stereo audio cables into the TV unless you want the TV's internal speakers to work.

If you want to hang on to your HDMI hookup, there is another alternative that may work. You could complain to Cox and insist on a different and hopefully newer cable box.
This might take care of it. The good news is that the problem is not intermittent; you should be able to demonstrate the problem for the cable guy to see at any time.

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

That should not be. Call Cox as I suggested above.

Make sure the cable box is set to use component and 1080i then check the settings (calibration) on your TV for that component input. You could just write down the settings from the HDMI input (brightness, contrast, sharpness which should be at 0, color and tint) and use those for the component input for the time being.

Hope this helps.

If all of that fails to get results, exchange your cable box for another one that works properly but you will still need to use component to eliminate the handshake issue.

Too bad those cable box manufacturers can't get their act together on the HDMI interface.
