In terms of actual national HD channels, Verizon has the most. Directv claims to have 130 HD channels. But they also factor in several PPV channels as well as Sunday Ticket as part of their HD lineup. While I do admire Directv as the better of the two in terms of aiming to please sports fans, Verizon Fios gives the viewer more HD choices. Now if they could only make a deal to get Rainbow Media owned channels and Viacom channels...But waiting in the wings to intensify the competition is ATT- Uverse.

I recently switched from Comcast to Verizon Fios and noticed a significant increase in the number of HD channels. I also see some improvement in the quality of the HD picture.

It's a tricky equation to truly narrow it down. Do you mean at no addition cost, as part of an HD package, including PPV, etc.

Comcast advertises the "most", but it is counting a lot of on-demand content (I have comcast, much of it is very poor quality b-movies and TV shows you can already watch). All services count what are basically duplicate channels (Same program on multiple PPV channels, HBO123, etc) . Few channels actually broadcast all of their content in HD in any case (a lot of old tv shows and movies "upscaled"). Many HD channels require further subscription costs (beyond just an HD package; ex. HBO).

That's hard to tell with cable companies. I live in Eastern PA and have RCN cable. On their web site, it states that they have over 50 HD channels. But I only have access to half that. I called and asked where the other 25 were. They stated that in my area (Lehigh Valley, PA), they have not yet upgraded all the subscribers cable lines to be digital compatible. So until they do that, they do not have the bandwidth to offer more HD content in this area. I then questioned why I was paying the same high rate as someone in their Washington DC area that does get all 50 channels. They had no response......

I just switched to Comcast in my area from Dish (due to the loss of the ABC affiliate station in my area) and it seems like I have less HD channels now. We won't have Fios for a few more months. Maybe I will switch again then.

Would the "over" refer to channels like HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, other movies that you have to pay an additional fee to receive?

Direct says on their commercials they have 130 all HD channels all the time.

What does that mean?
