Default Cable System Upconverting Question

So every time I see a new or old movie on cable that's in HD does that mean the cable company or channel (i.e.HD Voom Networks) "upconverted" the film? Is it that easy for the provider to do??? Hopefully this means channels like TCM are not far away from broadcasting HD all the time.

Default 35 mm

35 mm copies nicely to HD. It is not an upconversion it is true HD. I love the old movies. Cinemax has a lot.

Default Digital Intermediate

I forgot the digital internediate. Older movies get copied from 35 mm. New movies typically have a digital intermediate. The intermediate is a step in the mastering process that used 35 mm. Now it is done digitally. This digital master may be used to make an HD copy of the movie, or not. Hope this is not too confusing.

Thanks for the response. Hopefully stations like TCM and Fox Movie Channel start broadcasting in HD soon. Guess I'm spoiled now.

I find that old movies look great in HD.
