Default image quality with hd programs

I have noticed watching certian movies such as house of flying daggers that the picture quality is very dark and simply doesn't look as good as my dvd on my denon 2910.. but others look great such as the terminator.. also is it me or do some cable providers not include 5.1 on all thier stuff.. I have watched some movies and they are in friggin 2 channel.. I get movie central hd and it annoys me to all hell and back when its suppposed to be fully hd and its not.. what the hell?? is it bandwidth issues?!?!

Default Hd

The biggest problem with HD broadcasts is quality issues. HD can go from OMG jaw dropping to a pixelated mess on the same channel. I was watching old in HD the other day and the shots of the golfers coming toward the hole were great HD, the shots of the golfers swinging were not even good SD!!!! They must of had some cheap handheld cameras. HD just varys so much, its like a scavenger hunt to find great HD sometimes. Some shows like American Idol and esp. Saturday Night Live usually look awesome.

They may have a DD track, but it might not be DD 5.1, there are no laws saying they need to have a 5.1 track.

As the previous poster noted...DD 5.1 is not an HD requirement, but it's damn nice to have along with the HD image. As for quality...there are general sacrifices made by each cable/satellite service provider and in some cases, local networks. Verizon FIOS seems to be the only service that currently doesn't skimp on quality via high compression. It will be interesting to see if DirecTV's expansion of HD offerings via new satellites will result in an increase in quality. It's my hope anyway.

The golf on NBC did use SD handheld cameras. CBS has HD handhelds this year. They're awesome!
