I wonder if people are buying up the Pioneer units while they can.

I think people are finally seeing the light . . . besides plasma is pretty much only available in the larger (42"+) sizes and they're less expensive than the larger LCD sets. Years ago, plasma was very expensive compared to other large screen alternatives (DLP)-- now it less than LCD.

Maybe. If so, then perhaps Pioneer will rethink their decision to get out of the plasma business.

What Pioneer just needed to do was lower the MSRP to $200-$300 more than the competition (Panasonic, Samsung), not being $1,000-$1,500 more. The higher volume of sales and revenue would have made up the lost margin.

I have read on other boards and maybe this one that Pioneer had a flawed business model but a great product & just couldn't compete at market price due to many inefficiencies. Perhaps they will be able to re-enter the plasma market at some point .If not maybe they could sell their "Deep Dark Plasma Secret" to somebody else who could put it to good use.

Well, I'll give our super moderator Rbnick a point- but I seriously doubt that there were ever enough of the Pioneer plasmas built to skew the marketplace. Fujitsu, (who also made a damn decent screen) pulled the plug on their high end production before Pioneer.

as to that "deep dark" secret- I think Pioneer has already sold it- to Panasonic. Now there's a way to make money- license the technology to someone else, and collect a royalty for every set they make. I'll be real interested if the 2010 Panasonics get black level reviews similar to the discontinued Kuros.

And give Joe6P some credit- if all the reviews out there say plasmas are still better than LCD technology- AND the price is right- that's what he's going to buy. And dang, the price is right.

Nope, Pioneer HAS NOT sold their "deep dark secret" and have announced that they will not do so. I am sure they are holding on to that for future production.
