Default Did Best Buy Buy Some PR With '$9.99 HDTV'?

Quote:
The hottest story on the web today was none of the above. Burning up the blogosphere and Twitter was the remarkable "pricing error" that occurred on the website for electronics retailer Best Buy, which -- for a little while, anyway -- had a 52-inch Samsung high-definition TV listed for $9.99.

I saw this story on the local news. People acting like idiots on camera. No bro, you're not getting a 52 Sammy for $9.99. Clearly you realized it was a screw up. You gambled that somehow BB would honor it, and you lost, costing you a couple hours.

I'm kinda puzzled on one thing. Let's see, a news crew is there reporting the error and how BB IS NOT giving you a TV, and yet there was still a line. Surely the people in line figured this out before the news crew got there and yet continued to stay in line. Oh wait, I remember now, the manager came out and told them they weren't getting a TV, long before the news crew got there, yet they stayed there at the store. In line!

It's simple. Some people are idiots. I'm sure that a quick survey of the people in that line would prove that there's no lifeguard at the gene pool. Many think an advertisement is a contract, signed and delivered. And bygod there're going to waste their day in line waiting for somebody to do sumpin.

Not that BB hasn't been legitimately under fire. Back in 2004.....

In the US, Best Buy's mail-in rebate program has come under fire. The Ohio attorney general opened up an investigation against the electronics chain for multiple claims, including the fact that Best Buy would systematically discard valid mail-in rebates. Consumer research has also indicated that most people don't cash in their rebates.

Best Buy didn't buy any PR, it is just bad business to not have proper controls to prevent price errors. This was a mistake with no upside potential. I understand no system can be perfect but it seems like maybe Best Buy has a few too many mistakes like this.

It's a wonder that BB doesn't make more mistakes when you consider they operate more than 1150 stores in 5 countries. However, this is really a small firestorm that will be forgotten in a month. Nobody's going to take any legal action, and I guarantee they will lose zero customers over this. Even the most brain dead people admit they believe this was a mistake and not some intentional bait and switch scheme.
