OPPO DV-983H DVD Player review

The DV-983H's awesome picture performance and incredible feature list makes it one of the best DVD players we've come across, leaving OPPO's previous two decks looking like supermarket cheapies. But £300 is undeniably expensive for a DVD player no matter how good it's picture quality is, and if you have that sort of money to spend we'd recommend getting yourself a Blu-ray player first, because true 1080p still looks much better (despite what the DVD die-hards tell you). But if you're still unhappy with its DVD upscaling, or simply can't be bothered with Blu-ray and want the best possible DVD performance, then the DV-983H is an ideal choice.

I just heard about this player yesterday. Sounds like a great machine. But with a MSRP of $399 USDollars? Which might put it in shops at a little over $300. At least we can hope.
Problem for me is I already have 2 very good upscalers.

I'm an Oppo Digital fan but at this price point, it makes little sense to purchase the 983. If you have $300-$400, might as well buy Blu-ray.

Agreed. I have an Oppo 980 that lists @ $169, and I love it. Can't tell the difference between my DVDs, and OTA on my 720p set. If you're gonna spend more, may as well go BR. And you'd better have a 1080p set.

Well, no, this player is for SACD/DVD-A owners that also want the best DVD-V performance. If SACD/DVD-A isn't the primary reason to buy this player, then there is no reason, in my opinion. Blu-ray isn't the competition, it is the market for expensive audio players. I don't know how well this player will sell at this price, but the only comparable players are much more expensive. It is competition for the Denon DVD-3930CI and really no other current player I can think of and the Oppo appears to get better reviews and the Oppo is about half the price.

As far as I know, there are no stores discounting the player.

NY times reported yesterday BR player sales are down by 40% and Sd dvd players sales are up! This says a lot. I personally will wait because there is such a limited avail. of BR rentals, and just not enough material to justify a purchase. The Oppo's are in my opinion such a great deal, for quality v cost, and most inportantly the ability to play all my high resolution music, and other format dvd's that are much more prolific than BR discs. To sum it up, when Oppo makes a BR player I'll be the 1st (after Chris) to get one.

I don't wish to sound elitist, but except in extraordinary circumstances, I would not buy a DVD player as my primary source for audio. I have yet to hear one that favorably compares to the better line of CD players. Oppo Digital is no exception in this regard. While it is an acceptable CD player, it is by no means extraordinary in this regard, whether used as a transport or using its on board DACs.

I am sorry, that makes no sense. DVD is a much higher quality audio format than CD. DVD-V is capable of 96kHz/24-Bit stereo LPCM and DVD-A is capable of 96kHz/24-Bit 5.1 surround. I have no qualms about using a DVD player for audio, the DAC's can be excellent and I often use Oppo universal players for audio. SACD is also a DVD media based format, again far surpassing CD quality and requiring a player that can read DVD media.
