I assume that we would have to buy a new Home Theater system when this roles out?

So, are we to assume that this new format will be the 8 channel maximum through HDMI? Maybe a sort of matrixed set of extra channels? With 7 channel being done now, I would assume. I would also surmise that this will be a raw audio signal with everything great about digital, and none of the compression loss(not that it's really noticable to me anyway). It's actually kind of exciting and interesting; something to keep an eye on at the very least...

Default DD and HD

New formats?? well, I see that IF your playback unit has the Dolby true HD logo, you will exper. blah, blah, blah--- My response: If Mr Dolby BUYS ME a new dvd unit, I will be more than happy to enjoy it! otherwise, after dolby pro-logic, dolby digital, and a hi-fi vcr ($300.00) then 2 dvd units (sacd) then (DVD-a) and a new DD receiver-- I like DTS!! furthermore DD can suc a fat one!! blu ray HD dvd???? STOP!!! enough!!is ENOUGH!! UP grade this and that- bite me!

DTS and Dolby Digital systems today are capable of 7.1 channels, but how many movies actually use 7.1 channels for sound? I can't name a single one, and I own none. Aren't most 5.1??? Even the latest releases?

Picture quality, I think, is something that makes a noticable difference to both the average user and the enthusiast. Switching from a DVD to a true HD signal on my home thater and even on the plasma in my family room shows a noticable difference, and upgrading for better video technology will be worth it when HD Disk movies are available.

...that said, how much better does the sound need to be???? My theater's sound can alternately blast me out of my seat with an explosion, saturate the air with music where I can pick out the individual guitar strings being struck, surround me with the pattering of rain or make my head turn at the sound of a footstep behind me.... Maybe I'm not much of an expert, but I find it hard to believe I'd notice a definate difference with an upgraded technology. My ears will only hear so much.

I hope the new HD disks, whatever the format ends up, will still contain audio options so they can be listened to on DTS systems or DD. I won't be replacing my preamp or system anytime soon for phantom upgrades in sound.

As someone that has been living in a "cave" with a 1992: 36" CRT, VHS corder, and Yamaha receiver, I have decided to wait a little longer for the introduction of the SED, plasma 1080p, HD-DVD, and now the Dolby TrueHD...whew!

I may never get rid of this old stuff...

Maybe about mid 2007... year and a half, of course at which point there will be the new and improved and now the greatest Dolby True HD++. Ha got me.

Wow, I had a 1970 AMC Hornet 'til I wrecked it. I loved that car, even with all it's faults....
