Default Newb Can't play HD clips

i downloaded some HD clips and I can't play it on my pc. Everytime I open a file using VLC player, the screen turns black and I can't see anything. Does anyone know whats causing this?

What codec do those movies use? Work other (low resolution) videos using that codec? If you don't know what a codec is, tell us at least the file extension.

if you have dual monitors, try turning off one of the monitors (secondary monitor) and use your primary monitor only.
if that doesnt work, stop the deinterlacing option in the vlc player
if that doesnt work, try another player.
if its .wmv use windows media
.rm use real player
.mov use quicktime
if its .ts, sorry, but just stick with vlc player
pls tell us the specs of your computer, mainly your video card, cpu speed, ram, and hard drive speed. your computer may not beable to handle hd content, thus it lags, and probably just doesnt start at all.
