Wink How do we know it trully is 1080p?

Hey guys i am new here and i must say i like this forum. Anyway i was watching planet green and i saw that the camera that one of the girls was using was only 720p. So that got me thinking how do we really know its 1080p on blu-rays and hd-dvd's and not some upconversion? I know that transmitions are not yet available to deliver in 1080 so im not worry about the tv shows just the blu-ray and hd-dvd? I have a sony bravia 52" with 1080p. Thax guys.

The specs are usually on the back of the BDs cover. I would assume if it isn't 1080p then they have a legal obligation to say so.

Upconverted HDM releases usually have only minimal real fine detail.

If its theatrical content for movies that were filmed at 24fps its obviously going to be in 1080p24 without exception and thats the vast majority of Blu-ray.

Its only for some video based content like older TV shows that were shot in video that its an issue, not any movies that were filmed or shot in HD video.

But 720p60 video converts better to 1080p60 video than 480i60 video does.

It's true, if your display is only 720p, you won't be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p upsampled to 1080p. You could always check the forums for full resolution frame grabs (not photos of TV screens). Also, nitpicky reviewers always notice when a Blu-ray doesn't look absolutely perfect, and tear it to shreds when it doesn't. I would read the reviews if you aren't sure, and see if anybody cried foul.

There are a few HD DVD and Blu-ray releases out there that are 1080i and the back of the box will state this. I think some of the image/scenery HD DVDs and BDs were done in 1080i and I know my Japanese HD DVD copy of Equilibrium was done in 1080i. However, if you bought your 1080p HDTV in the last 2-3 years then it will de-interlace all interlaced signals so there should be minimal difference in 1080i and 1080p. As far as 720p goes I don't think there are any HD DVDs or BDs that have utilized that resolution.

If there were some non-1080p releases we have the smurf brigade, which would have pointed it out.

There were some early Warner HD DVDs that weren't 1080p.

Lethal Weapon, The Fugative, Enter the Dragon...there are a few more. Just can't think of them right now.

They were 1080p24 in release IIRC, except they were mastered improperly and were not at the highest video quality due to authoring issues. Full Metal Jacket and The Perfect Storm were among the. They looked soft compared to their later revisions and to their Blu-ray versions. I'm looking at The Fugitive HD DVD case right now and it says 1080p.

I have Enter the Dragon and The Fugitive and the boxes say 1080p.

The boxes say it, but the aliasing proves otherwise.

There was a thread about it at AVS. I'm pretty sure they determined the horizontal res was round 1400 IIRC.

A case can say anything.

There are theories on AVS that Batman begins was only 720p. They arrived at this by taking screen caps, downrez'ing them to 720p, and not noticing a difference.

Also, movies can be encoded as 1080p on a BD, the box may say it's 1080p, but the source content may be just 720p.

So some of the BD boxes should say 'Almost the Perfect High Definition Experience'?

I seem to remember that the compressionist working on it used some sort of noise reduction setting or used a setting that took the master and converted it to 1080i60 and back again, but that the end result was 1080p24, but it involved extra steps or processing that softened the picture.

Whatever it was it got corrected and I know that the release of Full Metal Jacket was better. From personal viewing I know that The Perfect Storm looked softer than other HD DVDs but was still better than the DVD.
