Why wait? Do you expect prices to fall any lower? Personally i bought pretty much all HD DVDs i care about a long time ago, so i'm set anyway.

Thanks, Mike. I'm probably set hardware-wise, but I'll definitely keep that in mind in case I get a hankering to own an XE-1.

I think Kosty is waiting to see what Universal does in terms of chipping away at HD DVDs exclusive offerings this fall before buying back in. Most people figured the catch up program would go much more swiftly than it has, and thus have unloaded their HD DVD collection. But given Uni has only released about 25% of their HD DVD catalog in over a year, some people are tired of waiting and (rightly) figure Uni has zero interest in giving any preference whatsoever to releasing HD DVD exclusives over anything else they may feel has a better timing element.

I don't get why people expected such a fast "porting" of the catalogue. If they didn't sell very well on HD DVD, chances are they'd sell equally poorly on BD in the near future. It makes far more sense for them to wait for replication costs etc to drop and the userbase to grow exponentially before putting the bulk of the HD DVD catalogue onto Blu-ray.

Their main reason for so many releases on HD DVD was because they were pushing the hardware. Now their hardware choice has collapsed, there is no longer that need to push the format in the same way and so they will now just be pushing for sales rather than putting as much as possible out regardless of whether the market is there or not.

I'm holding off on my catch up titles at the moment as I have more than enough to watch right now and I'd rather standardize my favorites on Blu-ray if I can.

No real hurry, except for the real I gotta have it ones in HD DVD that I don't see released or scheduled.

Money is not so much the issue, as I'm just waiting to get idea of what will be released in Blu-ray this year before I go on a HD DVD exclusives buying hunt. I figure by a month of so we will have a good idea of what the catch up list and HD DVD exclusives will look like.

Pretty much my goal is to have every one of my favorite movies in the best version possible and if thats HD DVD , I have no problem snatching it up, but i'd prefer the Blu-ray version if its available.

I'm getting most of my Blu-rays for $10-$15 and for that price its worth getting the Blu-ray version over the HD DVD if its available. But if the HD DVD version is all thats out there (Gran Prix Forbidden Planet etc) I'm all over it.

Well replication costs are now so low, thats not a real studio issue anymore nor is replication capacity.

But the projected sales are and so is a need to have stuff for a future pipeline.

I'm actually pretty impressed on the catchup pace, and I'm in no real hurry.

If its a movie I want to watch and its out on Blu-ray I'll buy it or if it costs too much I'm Netflix for it.

If its on my DISH HD DVR, I'll watch it there.

If its not on Blu-ray I have the HD DVD version or will get it there.

If its on DVD only and not on HD DVD or Blu-ray or on my HD DVR I'll watch it on my Toshiba HD XA2 upconverted.

All in OAR.

Yeah, pretty impressive. At the current pace, accounting for the natural declining rate, Universal actually might catch up in 10 years. Unless of course, the next format that replaces Blu-ray comes along first.

Well I just looked at your thread and I see your point.

But I think there will be a lot of those 167 HD DVD exclusives in Blu-ray cases by the end of the year. Its not a linear thing though, I expect Universal to have most of those in Blu-ray by the end of Sep 2010, but I'm going to pull the trigger in a month or so on the titles I want that I do not have already.

A lot of them I already have seen when Netflix did the HD DVD rentals back in 2006 2007 and early 2008, but I just did not buy at that time.

You're right in that it's not a linear thing. The catch up rate will slow over time as there are fewer and fewer HD DVD exclusives meet Universal and other studio's timing criteria. Universal has given zero priority to playing catch up over releasing something that they feel maximizes their bottom line. They don't care one whit about purple owners. Here is how the catch up program has played out since Toshiba threw in the towel.

Exclusives lost by month:

6/09: 3 (Uni 3)
5/09: 5 (Uni 5)
4/09: 3 (Paramount 2, WB 1)
3/09: 8 (Uni 6, Para/DW 2)
2/09: 3 (Uni 2, Weinstein 1)
1/09: 6 (Uni 5, Paramount 1)
12/08: 8 (Uni 2, Para/DW 4, WB 1, First Look 1)
11/08: 9 (Uni 2, Weinstein 1, Bandai 6 [Freedom series])
10/08: 9 (Uni 3, WB 4, Surround Records 2)
9/08: 11 (Uni 6, Dreamworks 2, Image 2, Surround Records 1)
8/08: 8 (Uni 4, WB 1, Surround Records 2, Opus Arte 1)
7/08: 16 (Uni 3, WB 2, Paramount 6, Image 2, Surround Records 2, Opus Arte 1)
6/08: 1 (Image 1)
5/08: 5 (Paramount 3, WB 1, Opus Arte 1)
4/08: 1 (Opus Arte 1)
3/08: none

Total: 93

It is possible that Universal will have a majority of their HD DVD releases out on Blu-ray by September 2010, but highly unlikely. They have already released most of the action movies and other more popular titles, and as I said, they will be giving equal consideration to the rest of their catalog, whether or not they happened to release it on HD DVD. That means the HD DVD catch ups will be competing with hundreds or even thousands of other Uni catalogs, and we have seen how slow the release rate of catalogs in general are on Blu-ray. Don't hold your breath.

Are there really more than a dozen or so HD DVD exclusives left worth really going after?

Some of the stuff Uni released on HD DVD really boggled the mind.

For some...they are worth getting just because they are exclusive.

No matter the degree of sh*ttiness of the movie.

Despite the name, 3:3 Pulldown is actually a marketing term that refers to a TV's capability of displaying each frame of 24fps video 3 times due to a refresh rate (the number of times the screen is drawn) of 72Hz. It's not a Pulldown pattern added to encoded video, although such a pattern could be used.

However, there are many HD DVD exclusives that were excellent movies. First one that comes to mind is Dune. I just hope it gets a BD release with the extended cut.

Ah, of course. Thank you. I was afraid it was something I needed to know about.
