I can't believe that people really won't watch DVD's anymore? I know some of them can look poor even when upscaled but theres too many great films not in HD yet. I love HD but if a movies not out on BD i will happily watch the DVD!

I agree. If someone says all DVDs are unwatchable, they simply have a really bad display (BD's quality playing over the flaws) or their upscaler sucks.

I have enough Blu-ray or HD cable to sat to watch that I refuse now to watch a movie on DVD if I know its out on Blu-ray. Unless its a chick flick that I am being bribed to watch and its already on my shelf or its on the HD DVR. I've pretty much stopped buying any DVDs unless they are dirt cheap and of a genre I figure will take a while to get to Blu-ray if ever. Thats even when I know I have superior DVD upconversion in my trusty Toshiba HD XA2.

There are only two ways I watch DVDs anymore. Either it's something I already own on DVD and haven't upgraded to BD yet or it's a DVD not available on BD yet. In any case as I replace my SD DVDs with BDs this is becoming even rarer for me.

I don't come under half of those so woo me I'm not as geeky as I thought.

I don't bother with DVDs anymore though unless it's either cheap, or shot in SD anyway and so there would be no benefit from a HD version.

I don't buy hardly any DVDs anymore either. I used to go straight to the DVD section in Costco first thing, for eight years in a row, while my wife killed time over the clothing section. This year I finally broke the habit and stopped looking, because I knew there would be nothing to tempt me (that's what lured me, finding something to reel me in ). I did buy a Laker DVD set (1985 Finals against the Celtics) a few weeks ago, but it wasn't filmed in HD anyway.

For the most part, watching DVD isn't a problem for me, having been used to HD, since the upscaling is so good on my XA2, and my display size is "only" 50". I'd like to upgrade to a 65" plasma next year in order to appreciate 1080p from my normal viewing distance (about 8-9 feet).

What's your SD DVD, BD, and HD DVD count up to Bruce?

I'd would have to say around half of those statements apply to me. Guess I'm not to tech savvy.

I lost count on DVDs, but probably have around 2000. Around 40 Blu-rays and 810 HD DVDs. I haven't bought much at all for the last 4 months or so.

Have you got all the HD DVDs ever made yet? You could call Guiness if you have done this and no one else has accomplished this as of yet.

I hit all the notes except for:

  • You can't watch DVDs anymore. (still watch the very occasional SD DVD)
  • HBO HD is a big joke. (Not a joke but not great either)
  • It makes you mad that Samsung calls its new 6000, 7000 and 8000 series LED TVs. (not mad, but shake my head)
  • Your HDTV has been professional calibrated. (Thought about this, but I have it dialed in pretty darn good)
  • Engadget HD is the first site you read every day when you wake up. (HDF is the first thing I look at )
So I guess I am not a full blown HD geek....Yet!

Change Blu-Ray to HD DVD and then I qualify for most of those items!

If you want any help aquiring anything from the UK hardware-wise, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I really want an XE-1 but they're still like £400 to get hold of afaik.

I'm going to wait until the end of summer to see all the Bu-ray release slate for the fall , then I'm going to buy up all the HD DVDs that are not scheduled for release in Blu-ray that I have any interest in. Some I may buy two of .
