i think you didn't read or understand the first link

Btw i think the third link is hilarious if used on the doom&gloomers.

Carry on understanding business

I don't disagree, but that cuts both ways. If it doesn't show a trend in the overall, then it also doesn't really show that there was big jump in BD. We'll have to wait and see with regard to any projections along any of these lines of perspective.

However, besides the numbers, I think there is enough contextual foundation for speculation that BD is going to increase, and DVD is on a path down, and that for now DVD is declining faster than BD is ascending, constituting a significant decline in the overall.

If you think that, then evidently you didn't understand it (which makes it a really strange choice that you posted it), or don't understand business. It seems pretty empty to have an inside joke, that only you get.

And relishing in callously insulting a perspective you disagree with, without any real regard for reality or truth, is just plain juvenile. But I'm not really surprised that you took that tack.

Indeed, however until the dust settles we don't really know what's going on atm. I mean in Q2 the figures stabalized and so all the losses to date are just from Q1. We really need to wait at least another year before any trends can be identified (heck it took until well over a year into the start of the economic decline for our government to even acknowledge a decline was happening). The film industry has very sporadic figures anyway due to the impact releases has on sales.

Q1 was generally considered very poor in quality and box office power this year, especially compared with 2008. Q2 saw much stronger releases, and this reflected in the slight improvement in Q2 2008s sales.

I personally suspect revenues for optical media are going to be on the decline overall for this next year, however I think outside influences (economy etc.) are causing a bigger impact on sales, which is something that should start stabalize in the next 12 months.

It could just be that the higher percentage for Blu-ray means that the affluent are suffering less in the bad economy, and not necessarily an increasing preference for the format.

Or it could also be DVD is taking a pummeling on 2 fronts. Some as lost sales to Blu-ray, but even more as lost sales due to less dedicated movie watchers cutting out home video purchases altogether during the recession.

Or perhaps even not due to the recession. Rather, perhaps some folks are no longer seeing the value in building vast libraries of video content. I used to have VHS tapes up to the ceiling. I have bought DVDs over time, of course, and even bought some BDs just to get my new BD player up and running. However, my interest in buying more BDs is pretty minimal. Renting (and borrowing from the library, once they start stocking BDs) will be more than satisfactory for me.
