Strange results I must say.

I will also say that these firmware updates are a PITA. I was going to watch a new BD release and after looping and reloading the disc several times after trying to advance past the damn non-bypassable previews ended up looping the disc reloading 3 times before i realized it wouldn't play. I just sent another 30 minutes finding, burning, & updating to the latest firmware and now the wife is sleeping.

These constant changes to BD disc encodes MUST stop or people will not bother.

I agree with that. What a sad state of things but just look at what the future holds, obtrusive advertising everywhere you go, embedded in everything you watch and soon to be on your phones (both cell and landline). Why Tivo is even putting ads in when you attempt to skip or FF through the regular TV ads.

My experience of standalone BD players has been poor. It'd take a seriously good piece of kit to sway me from buying anything other than a PS3 as a second BD player right now.

I agree that its the price of the discs that deters buyers, I am still adding HD DVD's at some of the lowest prices ever, cheaper than SD's. I love a bargain and these movies ended up too cheap to pass up on.
