Default Why Doesn't Anyone Want a Blu-ray Player?

Quote:
According to a new Harris Poll, more U.S. homes have a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player compared to a year ago, but adoption is slow. Only 7 percent of Americans own a Blu-ray player, up from 4 percent in 2008; while 11 percent have an HD-DVD unit, up from 6 percent a year ago.
Quote:
HDTV Yes, Blu-ray No
Nearly half of U.S. consumers now own a high-definition TV, according to the Harris poll. Add that to the fact that prices of both Blu-ray players and discs are falling rapidly, and consumer indifference to HD players is a telling sign.

More detail on this.

Quote:
Rochester, N.Y. — A new Harris Interactive Poll has found U.S. enthusiasm for high-definition movie players has been only “lukewarm” so far, with just 11 percent saying they own a player using the defunct HD DVD format and 7 percent saying they own a dedicated Blu-ray machine.

Meanwhile, 9 percent said they owned a Sony PlayStation3, which plays back Blu-ray Disc movies in addition to video games, and 3 percent said they have the external HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360 (which plays HD DVDs).

The online survey of 2,401 U.S. adults was conducted between April 13-21.

Strange results I must say.

I will also say that these firmware updates are a PITA. I was going to watch a new BD release and after looping and reloading the disc several times after trying to advance past the damn non-bypassable previews ended up looping the disc reloading 3 times before i realized it wouldn't play. I just sent another 30 minutes finding, burning, & updating to the latest firmware and now the wife is sleeping.

These constant changes to BD disc encodes MUST stop or people will not bother.

Man, how did I ever leave this forum. I'm calling shenanigans on this right here:

Yeah, I'm sure more people are buying products not even being made.

I agree with that. What a sad state of things but just look at what the future holds, obtrusive advertising everywhere you go, embedded in everything you watch and soon to be on your phones (both cell and landline). Why Tivo is even putting ads in when you attempt to skip or FF through the regular TV ads.

My experience of standalone BD players has been poor. It'd take a seriously good piece of kit to sway me from buying anything other than a PS3 as a second BD player right now.

I think people are interested in Blu-ray players but one look at BD disc prices and they might change their mind.

I agree that its the price of the discs that deters buyers, I am still adding HD DVD's at some of the lowest prices ever, cheaper than SD's. I love a bargain and these movies ended up too cheap to pass up on.

Then you should look at the Oppo BDP-83.

I am relatively certain that PS3s were omitted from this survey.
